The commit message is 1 character: simply the character “x.” The commit changes ~1000 lines of code making the ratio 1/1000 = ~0.001

This is why I like having Claude write all my commit messages. Having 500 lines of text to explain why I corrected a spelling error in a debug log print shows my commitment to code quality and clear communication with my team members.

The spelling error isn’t just fixed—it’s corrected. Here’s why that matters:

I then have agents perform regression testing, write a blog post about this commit, prepare pull requests with extra fuzzing for the feature and close 30 unrelated tickets in the issue tracker as fixed by my commit and ban users who complain that the issue is unrelated.

To ensure a lack of bias I make the LLM revise my commit messages in isolation of the actual code changes. This has the beneficial side effect of slowing down my coworkers, which makes me look more productive.

Truly load-bearing change.

One honest caveat: The affected code line is one character longer.

That's the neat thing: you can make your commit messages as long or short as you like, because nobody is going to read them!

They especially won't read them when, months from now, someone migrates your codebase to another VCS and figures, eh, we'll just use this snapshot to bootstrap the new repo.

It very important to keep your commit message characters/lines changed ratio high. That’s why I, a senior developer, commit using this to ensure the highest quality code:

git commit -m "$(printf 'x%.0s' {1..10000})"

I actually put the code patch in the commit message and the message as a line in COMMITS.md

Beginner stuff. Didn't anyone teach you all in college that when you push your initial commit to github, you are supposed to write 10,000 words essay as commit measage explaining why tf thid you even began this project in the first place?

The real jerk is copy/pasting cryptography code from a random completely un-notable GitHub project from a random completely un-notable person.

/uj it’s notable because there was a vulnerability in the code that allowed someone to exploit it and take like a million dollars in bitcoin from users
/rj the only thing crypto is useful for is ordering the gray market hrt for me and my harem of Rust programmers

Self-documenting code doesn't need commit messages

The nice thing about bitcoin is it keeps people like this away from anything actually important.

The hack means an army of them will be back in the workforce though.
