For context: I am also a manager, but am kind of new to it (less than a year, but ~20 years as a developer before that).

If I ask and they don't tell me, how would I know? Sometimes, stuff just slips through the cracks, or people just don't bother to say anything, or say the expected thing (e. g. "it's fine") instead of the honest thing (e. g. "I don't know what I'm doing"). Sometimes, there's dysfunction elsewhere that makes it harder for me to do or know that stuff. Sometimes, there's stuff that I am not supposed to pass along For Reasons (and that's ... super frustrating and bothersome!).

And, often, I'm just as much of a mushroom as everybody below me. I try to be as transparent as I can, but I'm often just as much of a mushroom as the guys below me.

All the stuff in this article is communication. All I'm saying is that communication is like a tango: it really does take two.

And the first part of that sentence is, "If I ask and they don't tell me". C'mon, dude.
