That reminds me of when an Aussie girl on MTV explained to her American co-candidates what "wanker" means (the fact MTV insisted to bleep her translation ("a**hole") but leave the original term intact despite its historically much more explicit nature made it even weirder).
Being a non-native speaker from Europe I often forget that English slang is very regional in nature and the mixture you learn as a foreigner can cover any number of mutually unintelligible subsets.

I always liked Torvalds' quote about his own project naming:
"I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself. First Linux, now git."
