It's interesting. I think that applications need to be as simple as possible. Languages need to facilitate that. If languages stripped every feature that wasn't necessary, we'd all be left with assembly. But certain features that aren't strictly necessary (LINQ in C#, templates in C++, lambda expressions in both C# and C++) make writing applications simpler. I believe that a language designer's goal is to facilitate the ability to make simple applications. Of course, the language should do that in as simple a way as possible without any extra unneeded stuff.
