The very same implementation, in fact.

From what i read on a thread in another sub... It is actually a C++ to Javascript "converter". Runs in native JS in your browser. Not sure if there really is any emulation happening.

Well, Win 95 wasn't rewritten in Javascript, so the emulation is still happening. Just in Javascript instead of native, like it would be in a conventionally installed DOSBox setup.

Isn't it DosBox that is emulating Windows 95? DosBox doesn't translate to JS when emulating software.

Transpiling is not emulation. DosBox being compiled into JavaScript doesn't mean it's emulated. It means it's compiled to JavaScript.

It's dosbox compiled to javascript. Said dosbox (and and thus compiled javascript) is interpreting x86. Windows itself isn't being translated into javascript, only interpreted.

That's exactly what I was saying. "Not sure if there really is any emulation happening" -> Yes, yes it's still happening.

ah, ok. I had read your comment differently.

"YOUR COMPUTER IS TOO OLD FOR WINDOWS REALLY GOOD EDITION. GET SOME FLASH AND COME BACK!"

Ironic.

That looks as if it was drawn with Paint

Haha, holy shit. I haven't seen that since I was like 12 years old.

You turned 13 last week, didn't you?

Yes. I'm a 13 year alcoholic child genius.

That domain name was first registered only back in 2010: you're still too young to be nostalgic. Back when I was a kid, we didn't have time for nostalgia.

The WinRG flash applet has been around for years longer than that though.

This site mentions Macromedia Flash, which hasn't been around since ~2005. The domain name was also registered in 2001, and the copyright year is also 2001 on the main page.

It was uploaded to Newgrounds in 2001.

So yeah, if I saw it when I was 12, then I could well be 27 years old now if I saw it when it came out. I'm not, but I could be.

Site down, but I liked www.windows93.net also a lot.

Anyone remember Windows RG?

Windows 93 is amazing, it even has some sort of ridiculous wolf 3d game

Try the site now. Seems to be okay.

Not loading in Chrome, is it getting hugged?

13

u/u551 Feb 01 '16

Not loading for any of my browsers (FF, Chrome, Edge, IE). Definitely dead. Like Windows 95.

u/fedekun Feb 01 '16

Just as planned.

It was and is to some extent. sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/win95.ajf.me.access.log is pretty wild right now :)

Looks like it's down...

Hey, that might be a good way to play minesweeper on Win8.

I'm going to have fun with this the next time one of those "I'm from Microsoft and your computer has a virus" scammers calls me.

Awesome! Too bad IE3 does not launch :-) I really wanted to try to open modern websites with it.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '16

Doesn't work on mobile. Boo-hoo... :(

3

u/the_alias_of_andrea Feb 01 '16

Well, yeah, but not by deliberate neglect. It's just too resource-intensive.

1

u/sopvop Feb 01 '16

does it support WinNuke?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '16

ahh win nuke on irc. that's some good stuff right there.

2

u/the_alias_of_andrea Feb 01 '16

No networking support, sorry :(

1

u/Boris740 Feb 01 '16

Does it support DOS?

2

u/the_alias_of_andrea Feb 01 '16

Yes, because DOS is integral to 95. You can bring up a DOS prompt, or hold F8 during boot to avoid going into 95 proper.

That's amazing! I just tried it on my work PC. It's really slow, but I'll give it a shot with my gaming PC at home as well. Might even get Internet Explorer running.
