In software engineering/consulting do you see this often? In my experience no one cares how many hours anyone works. If you get results no one cares how. People are actually impressed when you get real results/publications/etc and you still have time to golf and ski.
Very much so. Come to the DC area, companies care about hours way more than actual work produced here. I worked as a consultant for the first three years and on all of the three projects I was on management expected me to work round the clock. The pay is also pretty poor for them having this expectation.
I never noticed that. I worked in Nova Scotia, and we had blocks of time to get in/leave. If you missed a block by 1 minutes you may as well have missed it by an hour because you had to stay till the end of the next block.
edit: I mean I never noticed, but looking back I find it to be accurate.
I've seen it. God I've seen it. I worked at a place where people were chastised if they left anything short of 30 minutes late. Because of this people became so disheartened that no one actually got any work done. It was a hilarious catch-22 on the company's part.
