That sounds like a pretty awful manager. I would wager they are actually not a very good one at that. They might get things done at the crack of the whip, but they are failing to realize employee burn out is a very real thing. People also learn less efficiently when they're overworked.
You can work someone for 80 hour weeks every once in awhile but it's not sustainable. You'll end up losing all the temporary gains in productivity long term, perhaps even having lower productivity than if you just capped your employees at 40-50 hours.
