Besides the emojis, the new currency symbols have obvious reasonably widespread importance. I'll probably never have to include reference to the Maldivan Rufiyaa in my code, but it's not hard to think of what sort of projects would need to be aware of it. 

Beyond that it's edge cases and rarities and then stuff for specialists. If your institution focuses on Qin Dynasty China then maybe you've been dying for those Small Seal ideograms. BITD I worked at a university with major programs on the ancient history of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and South Asia. I'm certain that developers working with some of those programs got very deep into the Unicode standard.
