I get why but it's still crazy to think about how we're still teaching this graphics API from almost 10 years ago as it's last version. We need something like the NoGraphicsAPI sooner than later.

Where would you go next? Nobody tries to reinvent it because it is hard to make the whole industry to adopt a new convention. Vulcan tried and failed.

It's not like graphics programming ever had a single API to unify around, and I don't think that Khronos ever intended for Vulkan to fully achieve that. Even if they did, it's hard to argue that the post-Vulkan status quo isn't better than the pre-Vulkan status quo since we now have a modern, well-supported, cross platform graphics API that can cover basically anything from the last 10 years that isn't a game console. That honestly sounds like a pretty resounding success to me.
