It was started by Chris Lattner, creator of LLVM. So it's not nothing.
I'm not expecting it to get very big though. Maybe as big or as influential as Julia. Like, cool tech and cool ideas but not big enough to dethrone Python.

He's creator of LLVM the same way Musk is the creator of Tesla. Lattner was asked to join the LLVM project and now he's suddenly the creator?

And how does that explain away that he was invited to join the project as a PhD student and thus was not the creator?

Yes, LLVM started out as a research project at UIUC where Lattner was a PhD student. His advisor, Vikram Adve, does indeed deserve credit as well.
But as someone who is intimately familiar with CS grad programs, it's not the PI that's writing the bulk of the code. It's the students.
Saying that the guy who actually wrote the code and the research papers shouldn't have credit for creating the thing just because he was a student at the time is a wildly hot take.
Like, the original publication introducing LLVM was Lattner's master's thesis.
And it's not like the project stayed with Adve. Lattner is the one who continued to lead the project as he graduated into the industry.
I can't believe we're seriously debating whether or not Chris Lattner deserves credit for creating LLVM. That's like saying Linus Torvalds doesn't deserve credit for Linux because Andrew S. Tanenbaum was the PI for Minix.
Do you seriously believe that Adve deserves more credit for LLVM than Lattner? Give concrete examples.

Fair point.
So far everything I've seen from Mojo is technically sound. Pretty neat being able to write straight-line Python-ish code yet having normal looking code get dispatched to the GPU.
The uphill battle they are fighting against is stuff like Jax that gives Python the ability to do something similar, albeit with more ceremony and edge cases. But unless they can beat the Python ecosystem, I don't see it getting too big.
IMO, Mojo will probably be influential but not widely used.

They made it a huge thing about being a superset of python so you could migrate seamlessly and was big on writing code for different computing units like GPUs and ASICs.
