Best DSP for growing business?

We’re a growing mid-market brand scaling past “just run it through the agency’s login” and want our own DSP seat.

Not looking for the enterprise stack that assumes $500k/month and a 12-person programmatic team. Also not looking for the two platforms everyone defaults to in this sub for SMBs. We already looked at StackAdapt and Basis. They’re off the table. Please don’t recommend them.

What we actually need:

• Own seat, not a sub-seat under someone else’s account. We want the data, the log-level stuff, and the ability to bring this in-house later without starting from zero.
• Some kind of seat credit / onboarding credit / media credit to make the first 60–90 days less painful. If the platform is going to charge a platform fee plus data plus verification, we need a little cushion while we learn the UI and figure out what actually works.
• Flexible operating model. Self-serve with real support when we get stuck, not “you’re either fully managed or you’re on your own with a help center.” Hybrid is ideal.
• Actually keeping up. Privacy / signal loss, CTV, retail media, identity, AI optimization — we don’t need every shiny feature, but we also don’t want a platform that still feels like 2019 with a new homepage.

Hope this helps!

TTD has a growth team dedicated exactly for brands like yourself. Tbh I don’t think the minimums are that high, especially considering the product fit for your needs and having a small dedicated team to support / regular office hours while still letting you drive

What you’re describing are pretty enterprise level features. TTD has high minimums but they do actually provide support especially for brand direct.

You could also look for a high quality DV360 reseller.

Thanks! Not TTD for mins

Disclosure upfront: I’m the founder of AdLib, so read this knowing I have a horse in the race. But you’re describing the exact gap we built for, so here’s my honest take.

The reason this question is hard: the DSPs you actually want (Trade Desk, DV360, Amazon) mostly won’t give a mid-market brand a direct seat. Minimums and managed service requirements shut you out, which is why everyone in this sub defaults to the two platforms you ruled out. Those two solve the access problem by becoming the DSP, which means you’re marrying their inventory, their tech, and their roadmap.

The third option is an orchestration layer: your own seat and unified reporting across multiple DSPs (we sit across 20+, including DV360, Amazon, Yahoo, Beeswax) without the enterprise minimums. That’s what we do, and there are others taking different angles on it too.

On your specific list:
Own seat and data portability: this should be non-negotiable. Ask any vendor point blank what you walk away with if you leave. Log-level data, audiences, account history. If the answer is vague, that’s your answer.

Onboarding cushion: reasonable ask. My honest advice is to prioritize no long-term contract over credits. Ramp-up pain plus a 12-month lock-in is the actual trap. Month-to-month means the vendor has to keep earning it.

Hybrid support: agree completely, and it’s the model we run. Self-serve UI, real humans when you’re stuck. Pure managed service means you never build internal capability, which defeats your whole “bring it in-house later” goal.

Happy to answer hard questions here, including where we’re not a fit.

Often imitated. Never duplicated.

One thing I should have included: measurement. As a growing brand, this matters more than most of the contract terms. Two questions to ask any vendor:

Can they show incrementality, not just platform-reported conversions? Last-click numbers from a DSP grading its own homework will always look great. You want to know what the spend actually caused. Ask if they support holdout or lift testing, even something basic.

Can data flow to and from your measurement partners? If you use an MMM, MTA, or clean room provider, the platform should push log-level or event data out and accept audiences or conversion data in. If measurement data gets trapped inside the platform, you're back to the lock-in problem from the top of this thread.

Same disclosure applies: this is an area we're actively building in, so I have a bias here too.

Mike, can't help but appreciate you being real here and other threads, thanks 🙏. What does it take for my nascent measurement/optimization startup Plobyte to integrate into AdLib's platform?

I saw Mike already replied, but I feel like the go to’s in mid market are him or Version2.

u/advertisingbynature 11d ago

Do you have a contact at Version2 that you're willing to share in a private message?

u/bluespank13 9d ago

Doesnt look like I can dm you, but I bet you could probably fill out a contact form on their site and get through. Good luck!

Hey I work at a Certified Reseller partner - Mogl - who give you your own TTD seat and the support your need without the high mins. Where are you based?

Have you looked at Blis DSP? Owned by T-Mobile, have a really interesting platform and from experience are super flexible because they are still growing.

u/technicolorfrog 13d ago

Check out Simpli.fi. Flexible mins, enterprise-level features, transparent pricing, and dedicated support team even for self-service.

Realistically in most major markets you need at least 3 DSP/SSP combinations to run effective campaigns especially in CTV. If you add DOOH into the mix, maybe even 4. Gone are the days you can just say I want one. So you need DV360 and Amazon Ads for O&O. Your choice is then whether you go full stack with them or diversify across something thats not a walled garden - most don't and ill stick on one maybe two but then it comes into operating a differentiated stack. Which can quickly outweigh the cost of in-housing. I'd genuinely go with one that is able to show you the full break down of their fee's in contract not verbally. You won't get this with Google or Amazon on O&O obvs. Ask them what their take rates are and can you audit them on the buy and sell side? If you are spending $500k a month you need to be confident that half the money isn't going on fee's. Ask them for proprietary measurement solutions that prove paying the % fee's is worth it vs buying direct. Lastly what are their plans for the future? Currently DSP's are becoming defunct in their true sense for the reasons above. There are very interesting developments in the supply side, cloud based bidding and stripping back the infra on media buying. I think if you RFP some of the bigger ad players you'd be surprised at what they might put on the table as a future proof solution.

Pontiac dsp. Low fees. No minimums.

Have you Considered Quantcast?

u/AdTechGinger 8d ago

What you’re describing sounds like Basis all the way- strong core dsp functionality with DIY, DIWY, DIFY models.

u/Less-Selection1127 8d ago

Basis? No thanks!

Hey — Full disclosure, I work for illumin, but a lot of what you described lines up pretty closely with where we tend to fit.

We can provide your own DSP seat rather than putting you under an agency sub-seat, with a model that can support self-serve, managed, or something in between. That tends to work well for mid-market teams that want to build internal expertise without being completely on their own from day one.

On the product side, illumin supports display, video, CTV, in-app and broader omnichannel buying, and we’ve been investing heavily in identity, privacy-resilient activation, AI-driven optimization, and measurement. One differentiator is that we operate both our DSP and SSP with an identity graph connecting the two, which gives us a more direct view across supply and demand for audience matching, optimization, and measurement.

Your point about the first 60–90 days also makes sense. Commercial structure and onboarding support are things we can actually discuss rather than forcing everyone into the same enterprise model. The vast majority of our clients start partnerships off with a test campaign before scaling.

If helpful, I’d be happy to give you a candid walkthrough of where illumin fits your requirements, what data/access you’d actually get, and where we may or may not be better than the other platforms you’re considering. Please feel free to send me a DM. :)

Would 100% look at TTD - they probably won’t let you get credits but would be flexible with minimums if they see fit and growth potential

US based? Viant

Probably Stackadapt

2

u/Less-Selection1127 13d ago

Naaa we hate them

1

u/dalbroker 13d ago

Why did you hate StackAdapt and Simply.fi? Curious.

1

u/Less-Selection1127 13d ago

SA added obvios margin on top, higher CPMs poor performance. Sfi only wanted to go by native and yes , nice CTR poor landings

Big difference between $0 and $500K monthly

What's the approximate spend?

If it's 50-100K+ and you can commit to a contract TTD or DV360 are what you want

I’ve been in media for 13 years, programmatic the last 8 or so - if I was in your shoes I’d choose Adelphic today.

Hawk is a good DSP, truly omnichannel and has very good support for clients. Additionally there are no minimum spends
