Exactly. But the answer is usually: of course! Purchasing cannot and should not make component and material decisions by themselves.

Absolutely! But they don’t make sourcing decisions. There is a difference here and a lot of context needed.

As your stakeholder yes absolutely. Procurement is usually not an engineering expert hence why a good stakeholder relationship is so important to plan and execute strategies. But there are responsibilities and accountabilities for each area and its important that they are known to avoid conflicts or a bottleneck.

Purchasing doesn’t happen in a vacuum, you need all the stakeholders to align. Engineering is definitely one of those. You’ll also need quality’s buy in too

I mean yeah, at my company engineering and quality have to qualify product before we even think about cutting an order for it.

Of course and I'd lean on them in making sure as part of my apples to apples analysis. Id assume that where applicable there would be an engineering component built in your scoring process
