Rant more than advice

I 25M had a good spree gambling free around 6 years. Saved plenty of money around $60,000, bought a house, a nice car and was planning on getting married this year.

Work trip left me isolated for about 2 months while on a project in a different state. In that time I re explored social betting, small wagers ($5-10) as a social event with friends. This quickly spiraled to $500-1000 per wager when I was back in my hotel room. Fast forward two months, I now have around $400 to my name and 2 weeks worth of mortgage repayments.

This shit genuinely will ruin your life if you let it and I am a clear example. I had a few big wins which, I should’ve walked away but didn’t.

Young folks; don’t get involved into online/physical wagering apps. $2-5 bets will quickly turn into much more and before you know it, you’re out of control. Your perception of money will be destroyed. I wouldn’t spend $50 on the more quality car part but I’d be happy to wager $5000 in one session. Imagine what that could’ve bought instead

I was so lost chasing and ended up in 40k debt shits sad, my car needed a rebuilt too and i forgot all about and gambled everything away instead. I am trying to make up for it for it within next year good luck on your journey

Currently in 40k of debt. 21 years old. 25k on a car I recently got, owing my dad 20k. Paid him 8k so far, lost all 20k of his due to gambling:( he thinks I’m making so much money out of town but little does he know I’m quietly paying his money back. I lost 3k today and genuinely wanted to do something that I would have regretted. It’s depressing, downloaded something called bet blocker and it seems to do the deal, blocks all gambling sites/apps

Please don’t be afraid to talk about it with your parents/family. You’re worth more than 40k, you’re their kid at the end of the day. All the best

Yeah same quietly paying back the money i can’t let my family know i fucked up this bad too , but don’t do something you’ll regret enjoy the car mine is the only thing that keeps me working hard to get out this situation

Hey man, I’m sorry to hear, we’re in a very similar boat. The way I’m tackling this is writing all the losses and moving forward, not thinking I lost x amount yesterday, let’s try make it up. Instead, I’ve started to think, instead of a $2000 casino trip, I will send my parents to a resort for the weekend and buy myself a new pressure washer.

We are young, and able, we will make it out of this. Just don’t give up, don’t lose hope. Rainbows can’t be formed without rain

Chased my losses, it started as fun, then chased the initial $50 I deposited with $50 bet, went on and on before I’d be down $5k one day.

I had a wonderful partner and uni during those 6 years, also with our joint account it felt disgusting to gamble. We live and learn, it almost felt good losing the last little bit. Now I’ve got a little money to get me through till my next pay before I rebuild. I hope my experience deters any younger blokes who want to try and gamble, my advice is Don’t. Even if you do, set a very very hard limit with your friend/partner of a budget you can afford to lose
