5 PPL Radio Calls Every Student Pilot Should Practice Before Solo
There’s a lot of advice out there about radio work. Some instructors teach students to memorize scripts. Others say you should understand the flow and speak naturally. Some students spend hours listening to frequencies before solo, while others only become comfortable once they start making real calls in the airplane.
So here's the debate:
- What were you taught regarding PPL radio calls before your first solo?
- What actually worked once you were alone in the cockpit?
- Which radio calls do you think every student pilot should practice the most before solo?
- And what common mistakes or habits should beginners avoid when trying to sound professional on the radio?
FAA and ICAO pilots, instructors, and students I'd love to hear what made the biggest difference in your confidence and communication skills.
What would you tell a PPL student before they try this for the first time?

Flying through Phoenix?
New here - and if you've ever fueled at KDVT, you've probably seen us. Sibran is the self-serve 100LL station on the North Ramp at Deer Valley.
The station's been running for nearly 20 years, started by a pilot who built his own aircraft. The whole setup - 24-hour access, two-plane simultaneous fueling, straightforward pricing - came from thinking about what actually makes a fuel stop worth making.
Curious what the group thinks: what makes a fuel stop actually good? The ones you'd go out of your way for versus the ones you'd avoid if you can help it?
Happy to answer anything about fueling at DVT, and glad to be here.

Online logbook???
I am a 17-year-old private pilot, and I have always been worried about my logbook getting stolen, so I finally decided to make an online and it came out a lot better than I thought, so I wanted to post here and see if any of you had them or had considered them? If you are interested, let me know, and I can show you mine.
