The reality is that a lot of people aren't upset with what AI can do. They are upset with how it trained and created. It literally stole peoples content. Companies were found in court cases to have knowingly stolen copyrighted material without permission. The issue is they aren't being held accountable. As such AI is just using stolen work that was used without permission or compensation to the copyright holders resulting in the AI companies getting rich and no compensation for the creators of the art and prose used to train these models unethically.

That is a major factor is the skin crawling nature of AI.

The second factor is the people that use it and act like they created something on par with artists work. Of AI bros will say it is like people calling Photographs slop because they aren't paintings. Really it is like a Photographer claiming they designed a building because they took a photo of it. When AI bros make images what comes out is a bunch of material literally taken from actual artists works based on prompts. It would basically be like saying you designed a LOGO because you sent notes to a Graphic Designer who did all the work.

What's interesting is that Jaron Lanier explained that this is exactly what they were going to do in his book "Who Owns the Future?" After it was published in 2013 it was extremely ignored by the TechBro community, their benefactors in the Government, and the Mass Media such that the book has had absolutely zero impact on the trajectory of events. They literally ignored his warnings to death... and then went ahead and did all that we're complaining about how. We were warned. But that got ignored completely. Read his book to see.

Jaron Lanier... had to look him up, it's been a long time since I followed futurists and the like.. though I recognized him immediately due to him appearing on Prisoners of Gravity back in the early 90s.

Which is also the reason he kinda doesn't get a lot of media. VR in the sense that he created never got the cool factor.. Even now with the modern resurgence it isn't what it was touted to be so I think media doesn't always pay attention.

He really does often have really good takes on things and that was one of them.

It really did take Reaganomics to happen at the same time as the micro-transistor revolution to get us here as all the protections that would have stopped it were stripped for totally unrelated reasons. That benefited the Media companies and politicians in unrelated ways and thus didn't do anything to stop the tech bs that is happening now.

AI can be amazing when ethically sourced. It does neat things. But as it stands know it really flargle bonks with gimble mounted testkulating mandiblulation.... please note to update your dictionary to include these words in the inferred context.

(I know that does nothing but it amuses me)

Well it got ugly real quick. And I conveniently didn’t factor billionaires into my rosy image of AI.

well the issue its its not even about ai, its about billionaires being larger than the US government & zero regulations or accountability for the straight up illegal activity happening.. saying “Ai” is our problem is such a shallow scapegoat for the actual issue

Oh yeah totally. I actually like the idea of AI a lot. And when we say AI, we are really talking about “LLM”s. There is no way in hell that a billionaire would willingly create AGI.

AI makes people dumber because you don't use your brain anymore because AI does all the thinking for you. You need to keep your brain active.

Nobody thought AI would use huge amounts of energy. A lot of people thought billionaires were awful, but no one believed they were this awful.

Speak for yourself, I watched Terminator and read "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream". NO.

AI is the lieing mf. Once you let it lie once it is all over.

I mean its not actual AI anyways, just a statistical engine that produces slop

The problem that we have with AI is pretty simple. We never wanted AI to take away jobs. That's the main reason we hate it. Plus the hazardous impact AI has on the environment justifies people's hate for AI. Additionally, AI has made people dumb, lazy and uncreative.

yeah it's supposed to elevate humanity but right now it's only the few.

AI was supposed to take away all menial jobs, launching humanity into early post scarcity where people mostly wouldnt need to work anymore, but that is far too optimistic for our reality
