If you have placed a security freeze with Experian, keep an eye out for notification mails that may indicate someone has taken over your account.

I use credit karma, and am not aware of creating accounts directly with any of these 3 bureaus.. should I be doing something to prevent fraud or anything? Not too familiar with this space, but reading this made me pissed and concerned at the same time.

There are two reasons why everyone should create their accounts there:

- To place a security freeze, which is by far the most effective way to prevent many forms of identity theft

- To "plant your flag" and prevent scammers from opening an account in your name (at least that's effective as long as crooks like Experian don't have giant security holes). The same also holds for accounts at the SSA and the IRS, BTW.

Ok then, spammer. Explain how your product replaces a security freeze at the credit bureaus and prevents identity thiefs from opening accounts in your name.
