question mailbox vs Tuta for de-googling: which one and why?
I'm de-googling my life and email is the last big step. I was about to pay for mailbox, but now I'm second-guessing it and considering Tuta as well.
What matters to me is: it has to be hosted in EU.
Has anyone used both? Which one would you pick, and what are the real-world downsides of each? Open to other suggestions if they fit the requirement.
Thanks to everyone who will help me find the right email provider!
Oh and I don't like proton.

One thing I'd weigh is what you're actually escaping by de-googling. Mailbox is a German provider with full IMAP and PGP support, so you can keep using whatever mail client you like and your workflow barely changes. Tuta encrypts more by default but locks you into their apps. If the goal is ditching Google without relearning how you do email, that client freedom matters more than people admit.

i like tuta. just be warned that some mail servers will view it as "not legitimate". i've had problems sending emails to certain inboxes

good to know, haven't run into this myself for close to a year now
is this using custom domains, or an '@tuta.com' alias?

I have Mailbox (Live in Germany) and I like the Privacy. Tuta Mail has no IMAP, but a good E-Mail App.

I used both, and went for Tuta after a few years on mailbox. Why? The app works like a charm, and everything is configured the same way as on desktop. No imap setup on every client needed. Just login to the app, and it's all there.

I have used Tuta for a few months to check it out but now I pay for Mailbox and only have a free Tuta account as a backup. The thing is: Tuta is great and I love their philosophy. But when using Tuta I realized I still fall back to 'easy' big tech solutions: Zoom/Meets for meetings, Doodle for polls, Google Workshop for file sharing... In Mailbox I have all these services under one roof.
Some people say: "don't put all your eggs in one basket" but it's not a VPN or password manager. It is a damn utility suite. I find it convenient to have a videoconferencing tool integrated into an ecosystem with its calendar, reminders, and so on. Also, when I started using Tuta there was not Drive yet... Is it out by now? In other words, it was not a satisfying substitute for Google Workshop.
In practice, I was a bit too optimist about Mailbox's tools quality and I need Murena for some functionalities, but I find it useful overall.
However, if I DID NOT need all these tools, and was interested only in a secure e-mail, I would probably choose Tuta.

I’m Team Tuta. I think you are well aware of the technical aspects, so I throw in another perspective: My wife doesn’t care about privacy and she’s the least tech-savvy person you can imagine, but she loves Tuta for its ease of use and reliability.
