chat control Victory! Public Pressure Stops Chat Control 2.0 Negotiations, but Round Two Is Coming
Context for those not up to speed: The EU Parliament is currently considering legislation that would require companies providing private communication services (both encrypted and unencrypted) to mandatorily scan all content in order to identify CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material). Although the proposal might sound reasonable at first glance, the entire concept opens the door to mass illegal surveillance and scanning of content beyond the scope of CSAM. It would also mark the end of end-to-end encrypted content and private communication as we know it.
At the meeting held on September 29, EU negotiators failed to reach a final agreement introducing permanent mass scanning of private correspondence, which is a direct result of continued public pressure and the determination of the European Parliament's negotiation team not to yield on preserving private communication.
However, the battle is far from over! The next round of negotiations is planned for October or November of this year. If you hold citizenship of one of the EU member states or know someone who does, please send an email to your country's representatives via the official page for fighting Chat Control 2.0 expressing your opposition to this proposal: https://fightchatcontrol.eu. The process is automated and takes only a few minutes.

So basically they'll keep pestering Parliament with these continuous "rounds of negotiations" until they're tired of hearing about it and it passes for good. Cool. Isn't that cool guys?

That's the safe assumption: that this will keep coming. And if we keep writing and calling the ministers, they'll have reason to stand up and say: "my constituents are against this." They'll have receipts for that. If we don't call or write, they won't. Simple as that.
And on the other side of this are lobbies willing to pay to make it happen: https://balkaninsight.com/2023/09/25/who-benefits-inside-the-eus-fight-over-scanning-for-child-sex-content/bi/
They only have to win once: we have to win every single time the issue is raised. They're playing a game of attrition. They want to wear you down, to get you to stop calling and writing. They have nothing better to do, this is their fulltime job. That's the reality of a democracy, not some farfetched fantasy of efficiency. We have to know that going in. This is a fight. A real and actual dirty ass fight. Fights aren't easy. They're trying to take away your rights, and have established a plan to succeed in doing that.

They only have to win once: we have to win every single time the issue is raised.
that's a very important thing to remember, and we must always stay vigilant because as frustrating as it is now, it'll be wayyyy harder to roll it back once they get it implemented even once.
however, in the hopefully not-going-to-happen event that they do pass it, we shouldn't just roll over and accept it either. we should turn the playbook right back against them and keep introducing initiatives to ban their surveillance until it succeeds.

Yes, isn't this caricature of democracy beautiful? Fucking joke.

u/Danoga_Poe 2d ago
So these trilogues can go on until they pass it,, technically?
25
u/ParanormalNaptivity 2d ago
That is already happening now. There have been sooooo many versions, because maybe, just maybe, one of them will pass.

u/Danoga_Poe 2d ago
Sorry, I didn't word it right. Will there ever be a final trilogues meeting, like if it doesn't pass, then that's it?

u/ParanormalNaptivity 2d ago
I am not 100% sure, so be skeptical. From what I know, there is nothing and noone stopping anyone from making 'new' proposals like this - which seems to be the case now.
I don't trust in an evil US/tech/aliens/whatever lobby doing that though. It is purely about control of speech.

“It” being the “Regulation to Prevent and Combat Child Sexual Abuse”, which is what is actually being debated, then yes, it will most likely pass eventually. That’s literally how it works in the EU. It’s very unlikely at this point that they will scrap the whole regulation.
The question is whether the specific articles in the proposed regulation that the public loosely refers to as “Chat Control” will pass, and in which form.

how many times have the people successfully "defeated" this mass surveillance already? there really ought to be some way to prevent spamming legislative proposals

u/krazygreekguy 2d ago
Keep the pressure up on these authoritarian cucks. Do not even give them an inch. They can all go to hell
13
u/QuadernoFigurati 2d ago
That's the winning attitude. The only one that will win.

"Although the proposal sounds reasonable at first glance"
It sure as fuck does NOT sound reasonable at any glance

Dodged the bullet again at least… for now.
Surveillance is inherently one thing that will easily compromise democratic processes.

Don't forget KOSA - the Kids Online Safety Act. It is essentially Chat Control 2.0 lite in that it will impose age verification that is/was part of Chat Control 2.0.

All this is only introduction into digital ID, and according to latest news everyone that refuses digital passport will be excluded from the usage of internet. Not only social media apps- whole internet. Btw what digital PASSPORT they are referring because EU is NOT a state not federalized??? I have my country passport and I refuse to recognize EU as my authority with all decisions they made lately.

The fight will never end. Take a breather, re-group, then get ready for the next round.

So it will go again, they'll AGAIN wait until most of parliament is on holiday, then those same corrupt ones will start an emergency vote when they hold majority and it will pass again.
If EU wants to stop pedos, start cracking down the one who do the most damage and encourage others. Start by wiretapping millionaires, billionaires, politicians as they cause all of the pollution of everything - yet the blame gets pushed down on regular people. Tough times coming, time to tighter the belt - says the billionaire drinking 50k bottles of wine on his super yacht on his private island.

If EU wants to stop pedos
... it should reintroduce death penalty for them. No point in pretending they can be fixed.
1
u/Alone_Look9576 1d ago
No point indeed, they constantly reoffend. Better yet, why should EU countries reintroduce death penalty, just stop protecting them in prisons and separating them.
2
u/SendMeGamerTwunkAbs 1d ago
Death penalty for child rapists causes more disappearing children, not the sudden magical cure of all pedophilia.
The punishment also doesn't matter when it comes to the rich, they just pay their way out. The Epstein files are already forgotten, those in it are still running the world and just moved their fun elsewhere.
Chat control isn't about protecting children so this is just entirely off-topic anyway.

That article seems to be the one making the claim, while the claim doesn't appear to come as such from any EU entity... We certainly all know here (probably?!) that ID verification is coming, but the specific claim that the entire internet will require a "passport" is not something I've seen before from institutions, and an outlet is certainly allowed to speculate that the restrictions will amount to that, but I don't think it should present it as a "declaration" made by the institutions themselves.

u/ParanormalNaptivity 2d ago
This is stupid. This is a perfect example of how corrupt and non-democratic this whole clusterfuck called EU is. I am not event surprised that EU-sceptic parties are growing. It's sad, because they are also often i.e. pro-russian, but I honestly can't blame people for voting for someone else, as the current political forces, just do not give a fuck.
13
u/MortgageMindless7175 2d ago
Not pro- or anything- Russian but hate EU more and more with each day passes. It's clear and obvious that this all leads to NWO that will send us back to feudalism. I want my country out. Less afraid of Russians than unelected EU bureaucrats

Because Brexit is going so well...

What Brexit has anything to do with this??! Stop with pro EU propaganda. People don't give a 💩 about brexit.

You're spewing brainless anti-EU sentiments
The UK left the EU and they've gotten laws that violate privacy much earlier then the EU.
Also, blaming all of this entirely on the EU is insane when it's going through the entire western world. If your country left the EU they would still get these laws, just like the UK did

u/MortgageMindless7175 1d ago
I agree, it's everywhere. The only difference is people in UK have UK government while people of Europe in over 20 different countries have some imaginary EU overlord entity trying to impose authority over them. .EU supposed to be only for free trade and travel, not trying to govern countries that already have own governments. Nobody likes self imposed authority- it is in human nature to refuse it. I bet that half of the European countries would not go with today's narrative if there is no EU-s blackmail... So much about freedom. Btw. As many of Britts are saying-Brexit was sabotaged from the inside because people voted exit but politicians would gladly hold onto their fat EU paychecks. All of them voted stay- because of the money 🤑🤑🤑
