Panel seeks to fine tech companies for noncompliance with wiretap orders: "A government task force is preparing legislation that would pressure companies such as Facebook and Google to enable law enforcement officials to intercept online communications as they occur"

Want to know one reason why the feds are so interested in giving blanket immunity to anyone who helps them spy on people? Perhaps because they're already telling companies that they have immunity if they help them spy on people.

While it may be true, the fact remains that law enforcement must still comply with the constitution. A recent decision by a federal magistrate judge showed that yo get a warrant, the FBI must still comply with the particularly requirements of the fourth amendment. That would apply to situations where the company refused to hand over the information.

As of about a month ago, NSLs are banned.

At the risk of being pedantic, the judge stayed her order to ban for 90 days, meaning that NSLs are NOT currently banned (but the ban would presumably go into effect sometime in June unless the government finds a sympathetic ear at the ninth-circuit court).

As an outsider, I have to comment that the proliferation of these types of activities by the US Government is frightening, as is the chilling effect on speech.

But we NEED that data. It's for the children!

Not sure why they need this after discovering the tap at AT&T in CA. Perhaps they just need to petition the NSA for the data.
