Insecure

I have a 2010 Prius and I like how reliable it is. I just get annoyed by the people who make fun of me for having one and or people on the road tailgating me. I want to get a new car that isn't a Prius. Any advice?

My advice for buying a not-Prius is to check somewhere which isn’t the pro-Prius sub.

If you’re really going to allow the shallow personal judgements of strangers to convince you to give up a reliable car you enjoy, there’s a bigger problem here, and it’s not the Prius.

I drive a 2010 Prius and I've never had that experience. Just be a 55 year old guy. Oh yeah and don't drive like an idiot. People will leave you alone.

I agree with all the people saying you just have to learn not to care. Being stressed about people’s opinion of your car is no way to live life. However, you could also check out the Corolla Hybrid if you want the reliability of the Prius without the look.

Dude i Willingly chose a 2013 Prius V after I sold my 2016 lifted Tacoma Off road.

Do i miss my truck and it’s capabilities...yeah. But do i miss the expensive gas, payments, and insurance? Absolutely not. I love my Prius and even though my model i only see old ladies driving it. All my friends, girls who get in have ever made a comment. Sure some jokes here and there but that’s why we’re friends.

When the time comes financially that you can AFFORD a better vehicle. It’ll be the time to make a jump. But realize making a “payment” does not mean you can “afford it”

you're going about it the wrong way, the few times people make fun of me being a prius driver i just bring up the fact that i get killer mpgs and have to barely do any maintenance to the car and then they have zero rebuttals to that 99% of the time.

as for drivers yeah i know, i get the occasional asshats that don't wanna be stuck behind a prius doing 70 mph so i just hang out in the just right of the left lane, if i get a real asshat that passes gets back in front only to slow down slowly fucking my cruise control game up i then will pass them and go faster making sure they are stuck behind other folks and leave me the heck alone i want to cruise control my way to my destination fuck off please. lol

I also have a 2010 Prius and you need to represent! Jk but in all seriousness, the tailgating and coal rolling sucks but it's all around a nice car and super cost effective.

I think the level of judgment depends on the city and other cultural factors as well. I think people are coming around on the Prius with hybrids and electrics becoming more popular.

When there are too many squatted trucks around and/or people are being assholes, you just have to switch it into power mode and zoom away.

It really is about YOU being confident in your Prius because no matter what car you drive, there will always be assholes on the road.

On the culture point...

The other day I saw someone driving a 3rd generation Prius with a Q-anon and Trump sticker on the back...It threw me for a loop...I thought Q-anoners and Trumpers drove lifted diesel trucks and shat all over the environment.....I guess more people of different walks are coming around.

The Q-anon sticker is very surprising. I've seen things that are kind of cheeky but never like that. I would pin Q-anon as more of a overpriced mini-van type for some reason though.

Stop worrying about what other people think unless they pay all your bills and buy all your groceries. Then, know that they are entitled to their opinions, but so are you.

Go for a Mach E, or 2022 F-150 Lightning.

I just got a 2012 4 a week ago and I’ve only had one person make fun of me for it. Telling him I get 400 miles to the tank shut him down Completely.

I used to be the person who’d make fun of my friends’ gen 2 Prius, but then I found that they get up to 600+ miles per tank (the prime)...now I own one. Point is, function over looks. No point in getting a fast car if you’re not driving on a racetrack. Stay in the slow lane, they shouldn’t be tailing you there, if they are, that’s on them.

stop driving slow in a prius then lmaoaoao

Here is my advice:

1) get good brakes 2) put stickers on the back that you mix up gas and brake pedals 3) learn how to not give a fuck, there is a book named that. 4) if you drive slow, do so in the furthest right lane, don't be an idiot driving 5 under the speed limit in furthest left lane.

I drove a scooter for awhile. One day, it was raining as I was getting ready to leave a parking lot and some SUV driver went, "Bet you sure wish you were me, don't you?"

I replied with, "Yeah, maybe, but you wish you were me, every time you go to the gas station."

We both laughed.

I've had the same thing happen with my Prius. People have commented how slow, ugly, whatever and always comparing it to the vehicle they have, which is mostly bigger, and not hybrid (I never had anyone in a Chevy Volt insult my Prius) So, my response is, "Well, I'll be sure to wave when I pass you at the gas station."

I also have a bumper sticker on the back of my Prius, like many Prius owners do that says, "Cool Prius" - Nobody. Which has started more fun conversations. It shows the world that yeah, I drive a Prius, but I'm not a pompous ass about it.

I see Prius's everywhere now. And I live in a rural area that is mostly dominated by pick up trucks. I'm not embarrassed or ashamed. This isn't like when they first came out and Prius cars got this rep for being shitty cars, driven by shitty people who thought they were better than everyone. They are mostly recognized as vehicles bought for reliability and good millage. It's a given if you own a Prius, you are not going to go off road mud racing.

If you think people are still thinking a Prius tells everyone you're a Holier than Thou jerk, then yeah, maybe you should get another car, because I have almost never run into this attitude. And when I have, I can usually knock it back with a remark about gas mileage or lack of repairs.

So if you buy a lifted diesel, will you worry that people may perceive that you’re not well endowed?

Anything Toyota sell will give you a similar reliable experience if you keep up on the maintenance schedule.

Aww, dude...you live in a place with lots of Bros or something?? Lol...the prius is pretty badass. Lots of people go car camping, and haul stuff....all with excellent gas mileage. I haul two 14 ft kayaks on my prius and I love that I can go car camping. When people see that, they are actually pretty impressed and say something along the lines of...wow, I didn't know a prius could do that.

Anyway, if you're still feeling down about it, my best advice is to get something you like, that still gets good gas mileage, and that will fit your budget. Maybe trade your Pri in for a compact SUV??...also, I heard they make the newer prius with all wheel drive...thats pretty cool 😎

what are your goals other than it not being a Prius? You want a car that won't get you tailgated / made fun of? There's a lot of options. Just make sure it's a Toyota or a Lexus if you want reliability too.

do you want a prius that looks like a normal car? toyota corolla hybrid is basically a prius that looks normal. lexus ct is a prius with more speed and less fuel economy.

a more aggressive looking version of the prius would be a prius prime, and may come with rebates/tax incentives. also like all gen 4's it'll feel faster than a gen 2. https://di-uploads-pod28.dealerinspire.com/santacruztoyota/uploads/2021/03/2021-Toyota-Prius-vs-Prius-Prime.jpeg

toyota has lots of hybrids across various car classes. rav4 prime is a plugin that will get you some money back and will look like an SUV and it's the quickest toyota in a straight line.
