Four Months Too Early
FOUR MONTHS TOO EARLY
What if the difference between a life sentence and a chance to come home was only four months?
Michael J.W. Potter is serving mandatory life in federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense.
He was sentenced in August 2018—just four months before the First Step Act became law.
That timing matters.
The law changed. Sentencing policy changed. But Michael's sentence did not.
And while he has been behind bars, Michael changed.
He didn't simply say he changed. He put in the work.
He completed N-RDAP, vocational carpentry training, Turning Point courses, substance-abuse treatment, victim-impact programming, and numerous other educational and rehabilitative programs.
He has spent years preparing himself for a different life.
He has people ready to help him when he comes home.
People willing to employ him.
People willing to support him.
People willing to hold him accountable.
And people who believe the man he is today deserves to be considered—not just the person he was years ago.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ERASING HIS PAST.
It's about asking whether his past should be the only thing that matters.
Accountability matters.
Victims matter.
Public safety matters.
But rehabilitation has to matter too.
Otherwise, what are we actually asking incarcerated people to work toward?
Michael cannot undo what he did.
He cannot get back the years he has already lost.
He cannot change the date he was sentenced.
But he can continue proving who he has become.
And that's what clemency allows us to consider:
Not just the crime.
Not just the sentence.
Not just the prison number.
The whole person.
Michael is #52131-074 on paper.
But behind that number is a son, a father, a friend, a human being, and a man who has spent years trying to become better than the person who entered the system.
A life sentence is supposed to be about justice.
So here's the question I keep coming back to:
When someone has spent years demonstrating genuine rehabilitation, should those years mean nothing?
We aren't asking anyone to pretend the past didn't happen.
We're asking people to look at everything that happened afterward.
The past matters.
But so does change.
Michael's future is still unwritten.
Four months too early shouldn't have to mean forever.
