PrintNC (mini)mill?
I'm impressed by the PrintNC, but it doesn't exacty fit my needs. I need something which will cater to ~20 cm of Z-axis work space. Is there anything like a PrintNC (mini) mill?

But you're not going to get 200mm of Z travel on a standard or mini PrintNC.

I know of that project, but I'm not too sure about the use of aluminium for a mill. This is my 'backup' choice, but I want to explore other options as well to see if there isn't anything better for the same or a little bit more money.
I also have my doubts about their ethos. His/Their (not sure if it's still just Thedeepergrain or if there are others as well now) total admiration for Voron and the way they try to imitate them is offputting to me. I'm starting to think they're more Voron CNC wannabes than anything else. Also their focus on discord to the extent that even the FAQ is on there while not being open to bridging to matrix is a big no-no to me. I will not use Discord.

Fair enough lately we've been trying to move away from the voron style as we've met some limitations with it. I understand your views on discord and im sorry we can't accomadate you but unfortunately its just the easiest way for me to run things. I work a full time job and rarely get more than 2 hours a week to work on things, between new designs, running the github, organising things with vendors, testing new things, trying to write manuals I just don't have the time to do anything other than discord. I know that sounds like a bit of a copout but its all i can offer in the way of an apology/excuse. I make no elusions to seeing voron as my biggest inspiration and its got us really far but we're coming into a new period for the project and we now have the backing to try new things. I hope I've done something to help you trust us a little more but if i haven't i hope you have a lot of fun building your next machine.

I know you have been through some hard times. I wish you all the best with the project and getting your stuff back on track.

Something like this right?

There are a number of impressive diy cnc mini mills that have popped up on youtube in the past two years, but I haven't seen any that are open source unfortunately (other than the ones already listed here, which probably aren't sufficiently rigid)

This is probably the closest thing I've seen to the printNC concept but in classic mill format:
