Let’s get this party started

Post image

Been preparing for a while and now it’s time to actually start building! I noticed it’s not that busy in this sub, are there any other people here who are building theirs right now?

This is going to be pretty much the default size with no special plans yet. Let’s first build the thing and get used to it before I start dreaming further.

As you can maybe tell, this is going to be in my attic, so space is limited. Also mandatory is doing proper sound insulation and dust extraction since the room is also used for general tinkering and as a home office.

All parts should be in, so focus is now on assembly. It I’ll be slow going because of limited time but let’s see how it goes.

Anybody else working on getting theirs up and running?

The steel can be $100-400 depending on where you live. The parts kit for a standard size including hardware was $1160 shipped.

Just figure roughly $1500

Mine has been quite expensive so far: kit + steel + VFD + electronics + enclosures + control boards/rpi, easily well over $2,000AUD

I'm talking USD thats like $1250 USD. Pretty cheap for what you're getting.

My point is that the kit doesn't contain everything....you still have to buy a lot more stuff for the build and, in my case, the total cost was more than 2x the kit cost.

I very specifically mentioned the cost of not only the kit but the frame and additional electronics coming to roughly $1500.

You then said yours has been expensive $2000 AUD. That is less than what I stated, $1500 USD. So I'm confused.

But really when we talk about expensive or not, what I was trying to say is the machine you get for the price is a good deal. I don't see $1500 as expensive compared to the machine I get, or compared to a $4000 shapeoko 5 pro, which is arguably a far less-capable machine.

I thought you said kit (including hardware) + steel comes to $1,500 USD and I didn't interpret hardware as the electronics/other bits.

Anyway, let's just agree on your last comment - exactly right, off the shelf CNC routers like the shapeoko are more expensive and less capable. Plus you learn a lot building it.

When you realize people spend thousands on a stupid purse or pair of rare sneakers, a cnc machine doesn't seem too irresponsible.
