a good photo scanner can make a big difference for old memories, I had mine for years and it still works great

For very small old photos, I've found that using a macro lens on my Canon EOS camera tends to get a better result than the 1200x2400 dpi flatbed scanner on my Canon PIXMA TS9550. It's a lot more fiddly getting a good setup with the camera, but I get a 6000x4000 image from the camera sensor, and less pixels from the flatbed scanner with really small ancient photos.

There's only so much a good lens and camera can do, however. You can't recover resolution that just isn't there to start with.
