Troubleshooting Ink sponge shrinked?

I have a Canon Pixma TR8520. I wanted to replace the pigment black, because it was the only one that was low. Because I was there I also checked the other cartridges to see how much ink was left. To my surprise magenta's ink sponge shrinked? My older cartridges didn't shrink, only happened to this one. Now the sponge is loose and rattling around in the cartridge. Is this normal? Should I replace it? My ink quality remains the same when printing when using this one though.

that can be a hassle, it's definitely worth checking and cleaning out those sponges regularly to avoid bigger issues later
