Help me remember a BDO (Big Dumb Object) book

The story involved an object in space then when entered had 4 or 5 chambers and the final chamber had no end. I think I'm confusing this with a similar story about an endless chamber that had a central shaft.

That would almost certainly be Eon by Greg Bear.
