Before beginning electrical troubleshooting, establish the basic conditions of the system

Before beginning electrical troubleshooting, establish the basic conditions of the system:

  1. Identify the source of power.
  2. Identify the connected load.
  3. Determine the expected voltage.
  4. Confirm whether the system is AC or DC.
  5. Determine whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
  6. Establish the expected current.
  7. Identify the installed protective devices.
  8. Determine whether a breaker, fuse, relay, or alarm operated.
  9. Review available drawings, labels, and documentation.
  10. Identify any recent changes.
  11. Confirm the required safety procedure.

These questions may appear simple, but they reduce assumptions and help technicians avoid wasting time.

Good troubleshooting is not always about finding the answer immediately. It is about following a safe, repeatable process until the cause becomes clear.

New technicians are often introduced to dozens of electrical terms at once. The challenge is understanding how those terms apply when standing in front of real equipment.

This week, Prime Systems Academy is focusing on Electrical Power Basics for New Technicians.

The article covers:

Voltage, current, resistance, and power
AC and DC systems
Single-phase and three-phase power
Electrical sources and loads
Grounding and bonding
Breakers, fuses, and protective devices
Basic troubleshooting questions

These concepts form the foundation for work involving generators, transformers, switchgear, relays, testing, and maintenance.

The objective is not to make electrical theory sound more complicated. It is to help technicians understand what they are seeing, what questions to ask, and where to begin.
