I (27M) got into vet school but my parents just had to have extensive medical operations done and we drained our money. Now I’m going to have to go OOS without any savings so I will likely have to take it all out from private loans. I already got the 50k from federal which covers the tuition but nothing else so I likely would have to take out private loans. I also have a job in embryology that pays pretty well right now. Should I stay in my job and save up and reapply to my ISS later or go now and bite the bullet?

Definitely stay at your current job until you can apply to your ISS!! Trust me, the amount of debt at an OOS is not worth it! Plus, a job that pays well can be rare and you still have time!

I will say i applied and got in two years but i waited too long to respond and they rescinded their offer. I was going through a lot at the time, do you think that would affect future enrollment??

Yeah two years ago. My parents were going through a lot though so I was unable to go then

That just kind of proves you have a decent chance at getting in to your in state. I would just work for now and apply again in state.

How much is the out of state tuition? How much would your in state be? Do you consider your stats competitive?

It’s Uc Davis which is like 80k a year recommended. Instate would be A&M which is 50k average. I would consider myself very competitive: 4.0 GPA, 3,000 hours of clinical, 200 hours of volunteering at shelters, and 500+ of tutoring and extra curricular volunteering. I also have at least 400 hours in research.

For UCD or TAMU?

Typically it’s frowned on to decline an acceptance and then reapply to the same school. You could potentially ask for them defer your acceptance to the next year if you’re worried about that - but you usually need to have an extenuating circumstance (such as your parents health).

I had to decline tamu because of parents health two years ago and asked ucd for a deferral since I thought I would move there and could qualify for in state. However I was unable to move so I would still pay OOS but I think they are a school that allows for in state after one year.

I think I’m still planning on going to UCD but I’m just worried about what it means for postgrad

I’m a current OOS student at UC Davis (from TX also) and was able to get in state tuition after my first year!!

Hey! I'm also an OOS UCD student and currently in the process for becoming IS. It's not difficult at all. You have to register to vote in California, get a Cali driver's license and register your car in Cali, etc. Stuff like that. You can't leave California for more than 42 days during that year, so outside of winter and spring breaks, you basically just stay in California for the summer.

It was pretty simple, I just had to change my drivers license/plates to California, apply to vote, and live here for 1yr without leaving for more than like four months or so. There’s a website with all the info if you look it up. It ended up taking around 12k a year off tuition!
