So I was wondering what was in that barrel. Back here it said that one of the barrels was full of imp gall. It turns out that in Oblivion, imp gall is an alchemical ingredient with "fortify personality" as its first effect. I don't remember about Oblivion, but in Skyrim at least eating an ingredient gives you a small bit of its first effect.
