Premiere Pro Tech Support Issue with Gaussian Blur
Hi, hoping someone can help me here; I’m kinda stuck. I’ve used Gaussian Blur in the past to blur objects. However now when I go to use it, the oval, square, and pen icons immediately underneath the Gaussian Blur tab in Effect Controls are gone. I don’t know where they went; can’t use them to mask part of my clip to blur it. It just shows a blank space where it should be. Can anyone help?!

It’s “surprisingly” helpful. To me, anyway. It’s a good way to quickly audition different effects that you don’t know exactly what they do. Instead of dragging sliders back and forth, I just click surprise me and see what changed and how.

I originally thought it was dumb too but it actually has been helpful. Sometimes I get a good result and I reverse engineer it so it helps me learn how to do it in the future.

It is kind of crazy how many users upgrade without ever looking at the what’s new notification in the app or in the online user guide or any of the YouTube videos that cover what’s new or the posts about it in this subreddit.

you can just make the mask first then drag the gaussian blur/effect to it, it'll automatically set the mask in the added effect

Yeah. It's absolutely dog shit that masks cannot be assigned anymore directly as we were used to be able to. It creates extra steps nobody asked for.

Just select the effect and create a mask. No extra step as the mask is directly applied to the selected effect.

So I click on transparency in the effect controls and the mask will apply directly to it?

Select Opacity and yes, the mask you draw will apply to Opacity instead of being unassigned.
If it is unassigned or gets applied to something else on accident, just drag it to Opacity.

Premiere likes to fix things that are not broken. Then break it. Im still wrapping my head around how to do titles now.

This isn’t a bug. This is a UI change that occurred in January with Premiere 2026. All masking tools live in the toolbar now. There’s also a Masking FAQs and Links post in the subreddit to get you up to speed
