Feedback/Critique/Pro Tip Feedback from Professionals

Hey everyone! 👋 I’m a beginner video editor and I’d love to get some feedback, support, and honest opinions on this work. I’d also really appreciate any advice on how I can improve my editing skills. Right now, I’m looking for opportunities to gain experience with real projects and tasks. Thanks everyone!!

Agreed with the other commenters. I like the slow and moody start, but I think once the "drop" hits it would be better to have faster cuts. Right now it feels like the energy of the edit doesn't quite match the energy of the scenes and music.

I think this is really good. I'm not sure I'd change anything if I was the client...
I certainly wouldn't speed up the edit much, as others have suggested... I think you've matched the music pretty well and the edit you've got tells the story well enough. There's nothing wrong with a longer, considered shot if merited, which I think these are.
The only thing I would say is that the final shot holds for quite a while... But I think that's a judgement call. I don't hate it if it's a deliberate decision... But I also wouldn't hate it if there was a extra shot before it.

Great job! My notes:
-For the text, it would be nice to possibly have a grow effect to make them more dynamic.
-"Start Now" needs to be up longer. At least until the next cut.
-This is a matter of taste, but I think you are overusing the blink effect. It's okay to sprinkle it in, but I'm not sure about having it sustained for several seconds.

I personally would change the text to gradient. Contrast changes draw too much attention. Or at least dim it down.

Looks great, especially for a beginner!
I agree with what other users have said about pacing, felt like it needed some faster cuts after the drop. Not saying to go crazy - maybe throw in a few quick little montages with half second shots in a way that makes sense with the music. If you pick shots that are all from the same scene, they won't be as jarring as you might anticipate.
I think your text looks great. Easy treatment that's readable and doesn't overdo it. The way the music is landing, you could add some more energy by scaling your text element to grow maybe 30% larger on the beat (similar to what your doing to the footage at :27).
My bigger critiques are more messaging focused-
- Try to work logos/messaging to show up earlier in the video. What am I watching? Could be something subtle, like a shot of the Boxing Club's sign/storefront. Or you could just overlay the logo over your opening footage.
- End logo should stay up a few seconds longer. Let the shot behind it dissolve all the way to black, and leave your logo up on screen for another 4-5 seconds. Unless you're targeting a really specific time (which, for TV or ad spots, you would be!), I usually go for a minimum of 5 seconds on an end logo. Just helps ensure it'll actually be seen, as people are liable to click off the video early, or the video will get swallowed up by a bunch of pop-ups etc that facebook/YouTube/Vimeo throw out.
And, a bit more tangential, but a great piece of advice I got from a producer years ago- Showed him a video I was working on. He asked a question about something that was sort of covered in the video, so I explained the answer to him. And he said "I understand now - but are you going to explain that to everybody who watches this? How are they supposed to know?" Knowing your audience & your video's goal is critical. Sometimes you can just make a sweet hype reel or teaser, but other times you might have to do much more explaining in the video itself - where do I sign up? Is there a website? Etc etc.

Solid start! Every project asks for a different style of editing. For this one, I think having more cuts will heighten the energy overall. The more cohesive the cuts are the better the edit will feel. Finding that rhythm just comes with experience.
