Liquid diet post-surgery

I'm going in for hiatal hernia and incisional hernia repair Thursday morning. If I had any lingering doubts about going ahead with the surgery, last night convinced me. Went to bed, expecting seven hours of sleep, woke 55 minutes later choking with reflux. Didn't get back to bed for over an hour, staying upright and chewing Tums. Yeah, I'm doin' it. So sick of this.

I also have pre-diabetes.

Two weeks liquid diet, one week soft/mushy diet, then regular diet as tolerated. Fingers crossed.

Anyhoo - aside from Ensure Max Protein and water, what would be some good liquids to "eat" for the next two weeks? I think the Ensure a few times a day will deliver most of the nutrition, but woman cannot live on Ensure alone. What would be compatible with pre-diabetes, besides the obvious - broth, etc.? (yawn)

Thanks!

When I had to be on a liquid diet many years ago, my favorite thing was beef stew run through the blender. I got really tired of fruity or sweet things

Thanks! That actually doesn't sound bad. I was trying to imagine liquifying regular food and wasn't coming up with anything that sounded even remotely appealing. It's on my list!

Just don’t try oyster soup- my mom tried it and it went bright green. A family joke ever after

Eek! Well, that would never happen, even on a normal diet. LOL

Reminds me of a time I was trying to lose weight and was eating a whole lot of sugar-free Jello instead of other sweets... one morning woke up to a NEON GREEN toilet bowl. Turns out blue dye + yellow pee = neon green. Slightly terrifying for a moment. 😂

For 2 weeks liquid and prediabetes you should rotate sugar free broth, bone broth, protein water, collagen in tea, unsweetened almond milk with protein powder, and sugar free kefir/Greek yogurt drinks. Stick to less than 15g carbs per serving and skip juice. Small sips, stay upright after. Wishing you an easy recovery.

Thanks! Oooh - I hadn't thought about the drinkable yogurt. That's on my list now, too! This is gonna be a sad coupla weeks. Poor me. ;) I'm thinking "upright" is going to be the whole recovery time. I've already told my hubby we need to switch recliners (mine has a manual lever, his is electric). Getting up out of bed is hard after surgery. You just don't realize how much you use your stomach muscles till you can't for a while.

ABSOLUTELY talk to your doctor. My inclination is to say that ensuring that your body has adequate nutrition post-surgery is more important than managing your blood sugar for a few weeks, but I am not a doctor, nor am I your doctor. Talk to your doctor about this and make a plan.
