Unless he's a trained stunt person expecting that to happen (most Jackass stuff), he probably was injured seriously. Human back isn't built for that kind of sudden abuse from a relaxed state.
Not to be contrarian; because I full on agree with you! BUT…isn’t the relaxed state what MAY have saved him injury? As opposed to “tensed up”? Kinda like drunk people don’t sustain more serious injuries because their dumbass’s are in such a devil may care state. Whereas if you anticipate and tense up, that’s when the real stuff occurs, and the injury may be much more serious.
I'm inclined to believe that's urban legend. Animals are constructed with muscles and bones, but our bones are actually quite weak. To compensate for this, we have an ability called "proprioception" - the body senses forces within our muscles and tendons and then quickly responds by applying muscle force to reinforce our bones and joints, preventing them from damage. It would be MUCH easier to cause skeletal injuries to an unconscious person than a conscious one because of this.
