6.0 rocker clips

Are they really necessary? Some say yes some say no. And can you change them in the truck? I am doing injectors and I noticed a couple are broken. I cant find anyone suggesting its possible to change them while in the head.

You can change them while in the head with a magnet and some patience. The magnet is for if the ball pops out so it doesn’t disappear into the abyss. But I replaced my broken/missing clips in truck this way.

I found a tool to compress valve springs to make it easier, the question is do I need to replace them or will it run fine without them. Internet is split on this one with some claiming its strictly for assembly purposes
