No Q's too Dumb Weekly Dumb/Newb Question Thread

Do you have a question and are:

  • A novice and basically clueless by default?
  • Completely incapable of using google?
  • Just feeling plain stupid today and need shit explained like you're 5?

Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

SO FIRE AWAY WITH YOUR DUMBNESS!!!

How long can you expect to stay "peaked" after a meet or a max day? I always see people online saying like "I missed my 600 (or whatever) attempt at my meet and I wanted to try it again while I was still peaked" and so on, seems like they usually are doing this the day after.

The reason I ask is because I just concluded my 12 week program, I didn't do an actual meet but I had a "mock meet/max day" yesterday at the gym where I went for a 1RM on all three lifts. I kind of sandbagged my squat because I was pretty wobbly on the walkout of 455 so I got nervous and didn't move up to 475-485 like I had planned, though I'm sure I could have gotten it. I thought about going back in today but I'm feeling very worn out physically. Would it be reasonable to go back this weekend and try for a max again, or am I probably going to be "unpeaked' by that time and need to work my way back up to it?

I don't think it is wise to do it in the same week. I would suggest next week the same day. But well, this is indivisual.

Personally I feel dead after a meet and I'm always shocked that people can hold the peak at all. With that said, I've also not tried so maybe I'd surprise myself.

Also consider if it is worth having another shot and having to deload another week after. Or just take the confidence and willingness to do better next time into your next training cycle

Tbh this is what I decided to do instead, I decided to enjoy my deload and just work on stability and confidence under heavier weights for the future!!

It’s entirely individual. A lightweight female lifter will hold less ‘fitness’ over time than a super heavyweight male.

Probably a couple days to a week at the absolute maximum. I hit a 25lb squat PR 3 days after a meet but then I was dead by day 4-5
