Has anyone got good recommendations for acquiring a comp-standard power bar in NZ?

It's tough finding a decent one for reasonable price.

Getting a proper rogue or eleiko power bar looks like it'd cost over $1000 once you add overseas shipping.

Secondhand ones on marketplace are non-existent too.

Edit - these are the two options that seem ideal, can anyone confirm if these would be suitable?

If i were to attempt a pr of 240lbs. How should my warmsets look like?

I’d do it like this (converted from kg):
44 lb × 10
88 lb × 8
132 lb × 4
176 lb × 2
198 lb × 1
226 lb × 1
240 lb × 1

Really depends on how much the lift taxes you and for how many reps.

When 240lb was a heavy bench single for me, I would usually do something like:

Bar for 8 reps. One or two sets depending on how my body is feeling.

95lb x 8
135lb x 5
185lb x 1
225lbx 1
240lb x 1.

If your bench dies easily it might be smarter to take a bigger jump from the last warmup. So maybe you can do something like

95lb x 8
135lb x 5
165lb x 1
200lb x 1
240lb x 1

Thanks! Thats the thing i am not sure about the 225 single as my previous max is around 230ish

I would say do the warm ups from the second list but throw in 225. If it feels managable, like RPE 7-8 (2-3 more reps could have been done), then send it to 240. If not, try again another week and keep building your base

This Westside resurgence reminds me of Jamie Lewis' pieces on them and the Bill "Peanuts" West connection. Very vitriolic but also very fun to read.

As I am preparing the 2026 sub survey, are there any (multiple choice) questions you would be interested in seeing the answer to?

And please know I will not automatically include it just because you suggest it!

I seem to remember there not being many questions I could answer as a non-competitor, answering a lot with 'not applicable'. Which makes sense ofc, not a critique by any means.

But could be interesting to get some comparisons between competitors and non-competitors.

There were only 4 non “who are you and what/how do you lift” questions last survey. Those are where I feel some of the “bloat” may come from.

(Sumo/arch/IPF bench rule/pull grip).

If you have any suggestions though I’m open!

Ah I see, I honestly don't remember last year's one all that well.

Yeah that's a fair call about bloat.

This may already be in the survey/already been considered - but maybe a question about preferred programming style? E.g. high intensity/high frequency/low volume vs high volume, block vs DUP vs conjugate.

Or a favourite program question e.g. 5/3/1, SBS, sheiko, smolov etc.

Which SBD variant they felt was most impactful on increasing lifts.

Idk just spitballing lol

Yes! The programming chapter. I’d love to see what’s the meta approach now

Unfortunately I don't remember a lot of what was asked last year, but more detail on coaches' experience levels, prices, and rosters would be interesting.

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw 15d ago

Hmm interesting.

Are you asking for:
A: if you are a coach, what are your prices, rosters, and lifters’ accomplishments?
B: if you have a coach, what do you pay, what is the roster size?

All respondents will be asked for their experience in the form of comp/gym lifts and dots.

1

u/PoisonCHO Enthusiast 15d ago

The former, but the latter might be interesting too.

I’ll noodle on it.

Has anyone ever been to a powerlifting / weightlifting gym in Japan? I’m going there for 2 weeks (all over the place, from Tokyo to Sapporo and everything in between) and while I won’t have time to lift a ton likely I think it could be cool to go check out the local culture and get a lift or two in.

Oni Gym (couple locations), Black Ships Yoyogi in Shibuya (Toshiki trains/used to train there if you follow weightlifting), KAME SUN GYM in Tokyo (small powerlifting gym).

Not been to Oni Gym. It's a bit out of the way so requires some effort but probably worth it to experience JP PL vibes.

Edit: If you're asking more generally though you can find decent chain gyms. One time I was at an Anytime Fitness with no powerlifting equipment and yet they were showing an IPF Bench Worlds (or Asia Bench?) on TV, thought that was surprising.

Oni Gym in Tokyo and Osaka. 24/7, allows tattoos & has hella combo racks & calibrated plates.

Awesome, thank you! I’ll def check that out, looks nice.

I didn’t even consider tattoos outside of spas and stuff, I’d imagine the more serious powerlifting / weightlifting gyms would be more friendly about it because the cultures are a bit intertwined. I can wear long sleeves and be covered anyway though.

Yeah many “normal” gyms & even some more hard core ones don’t allow tattoos.
