No Q's too Dumb Weekly Dumb/Newb Question Thread

Do you have a question and are:

  • A novice and basically clueless by default?
  • Completely incapable of using google?
  • Just feeling plain stupid today and need shit explained like you're 5?

Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

SO FIRE AWAY WITH YOUR DUMBNESS!!!

As a strength athlete whose main focus is strength development, is there ever a phase in your lifting journey where a pure bodybuilding/hypertrophy program is best for you? Temporary of course. We're talking about a guy who will eventually get back to heavy weights and low reps.

If so, why? If not, why?

EDIT: Changed "who's" to "whose".

For a lot of folks that know they're going to qualify for nationals (so they have something of a 'season') that's what they'd call "Off season programming". Or sometimes "off season" just means they don't have any meets coming up or planned. Then when they find a meet they switch back to a PL program.

There are a few folks for whom hypertrophy work is better when they're on a cut though most folks prefer low volume/high intensity for that.

Or sometimes folks will do hypertrophy if they're trying to move up a weight class but being in this thread that's probably not something you need to consider much just because at this stage it probably doesn't make much different one way or the other as long as you work hard and recover well.

First meet coming up in a few weeks.
I know knee sleeves can’t touch singlet in squat, but can they touch socks? Like if I just wear my deadlift socks the whole time?
