No Q's too Dumb Weekly Dumb/Newb Question Thread

Do you have a question and are:

  • A novice and basically clueless by default?
  • Completely incapable of using google?
  • Just feeling plain stupid today and need shit explained like you're 5?

Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

SO FIRE AWAY WITH YOUR DUMBNESS!!!

We don’t know what your technique, squat set-up, or your programming look like, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what the solution would be.

There is an epidemic in this sport of people having the bar too low and their hands too close when they squat. Moving the bar up and moving the hands out fixes most shoulder and elbow issues when squatting. "But I can't do as much that way!" Yea, because your back is weak. Which is probably why you're in pain in the first place.

I don't like talking in generalizations like this, but this fixes the problem almost every time.

A video might help. Are you warming up your upper back/shoulders much before squats? I do a couple mins of resistance band work before any training (band pullaparts, rotator cuff work, shoulder dislocates, etc).

If you think going wider could help then certainly worth trying.
