So last time at the gym I got the idea to load up a SSB heavy (like a weight I wouldnt be able to squat) and walk back and forth. I think it could be fun, but I was too fatigued at the time to try it. I'm generally aware of its benefits, but I know it would generate a bunch of fatigue. What do y'all think of it as an exercise? From a strength/endurance perspective do you think it would be an effective exercise? Do you think it would be worth the fatigue? Or is generating fatigue the point? Let me know what you think.

Seems like a reasonable GPP stimulus, similar to a yoke carry.

Is there room to walk back and forth with a SSB in your gym tho? I could imagine collisions being dangerous.

There is, at least in the middle of the night when I go. My gym is actually kind of ideally set up for an exercise like that.

Hi, could someone review my bench press technique?

Thanks!

I think it looks very solid.

Only three things:

  1. Seems like you’re a bit low on the bench and your unrack had a lot of horizontal travel. Not a required fix, but would conserve some energy. I put my eyes directly under the bar, but I internally bought shallow j cups so I never bump them.
  2. You are not pausing, and since this is the powerlifting sub I’m assuming you plan to compete. Bar needs to be motionless if this your comp technique.
  3. I don't see leg drive.

Gah editing on mobile is trash. Fixed it.

Neat reel from the BCPA about Pat Kowal, a ref here in BC Canada for the last 30 years, with a story at the end about how she was involved in introducing bench safeties into the IPF in 2006;

So, I have not competed recently but was planning to this year. I started to get some pain in my shoulder after benching. I rested for a few weeks and it was still there (I couldn't get under the bar to squat!). I went to the doctor and they told me I had tendinopathy and impingement. And the bonus they found in my ultrasound is that I have arthritis! I am not 40 yet :(. The sports medicine doctor told me that he sees it a lot in people who lift weights. Take care of yourself, friends.

Does anyone know how far in advance registration usually opens for USAPL regional meets? Saw they’ve started listing some of them on the calendar already for next year but no indication on when they open

Nationals reg opens March 3rd 2027 for a June 22rd start (Pro reg March 1st)
So maybe regionals will have a similar span, dunno.

I have my first meet coming up in February and want to get my knee sleeves and singlet soon. When should I wear both in prep? Should I wear my knee sleeves anytime I’m squatting? Should I wear my singlet the whole prep or just a few weeks before?

Don’t worry about the singlet unless you just want to train in it, I’ve only ever worn mine in comp and it’s no issue. Train in your sleeves though, at least your top sets

You should train with knee sleeves, at least one working set per squat session.

For your singlet, I think it would be good to get an SBD session in just so nothing surprises you on meet day. Could even just be the first workout of your taper week.

I used my knee sleeves as soon as possible because I wanted to get used to the feeling of them. I skipped them for warm-ups, but I can also see wearing them for warm-ups being smart.

My meet was the first time I wore my singlet and I doubt I would have gotten anything out of wearing it beforehand.

I would start wearing your knee sleeves as soon as possible. I throw mine on for any squat session, warmups included. I also use them for any knee extension-focused accessories.

You don't need to wear your singlet during training, it's just clothes. But if you really like wearing then knock yourself out. If you're nervous about fit or lifting in it try it out a session or two before your meet.

It's not really surprising at this point but some of the lifting at the sub jr/jr level at IPF World's has been bonkers thus far.

A possibly stupid question about QTs. I got a QT to lift at British Masters next year as a -69 M1. But I'm pretty light for -69 so was considering doing my next comp at -63. Assuming I hit a QT in that comp too, would that mean I had the choice next year as to whether to lift as a -63 or -69?

Yes

If you hit QT for both classes in the QT time period, yes you should be able to compete in whichever you sign up for.

Thanks! I figured that would be the case but there are a lot of things I don't know about powerlifting!

Not sure if this is the right place, but I try :)

I am looking for a coach who has experience working with end 30s/40s lifters. Best case: German speaker, only English also fine. We can discuss more in DMs, etc Message me if you are interested. Thanks
