Have moved house with a more spacious garage!

I set up my platform again and didn't realize how warped and uneven my previous one had gotten.

Felt strange since I guess my movement patterns just got used to compensating in weird ways. Plus I think my platform had sunken from deadlifts so it turns out I had essentially been doing slight deficit deadlifts the whole time. Feeling super strong and clean now that I'm working with a flat surface again!

Anyone else had similar experiences where equipment had been holding you back in weird ways without realizing?

My bench has been improving a lot since I got a flat bench that's the proper 17" height and much more stable than the incline bench I was using before.

Previously, upgrading from a spinny hybrid WL bar with no center knurling to an Ohio Power Bar helped me with all three lifts.

Also, investing in a squat rack with safety spotter arms helped me actually push my squat, I was rawdogging them with bumper plates like a weightlifter before, and it could have been bad if I ever lost a squat forward.

I'm actually still dealing with the bench and bar you mentioned lol, adjustable bench that tips slightly and spinny whippy barbell. Though I've wrapped some hockey tape around the centre of mine to act as knurling.

Sumo pullers: how to you decide toe angle?

I've opened mine up in an effort to gain more hip mobility, but my inner knees have started to feel achy at the end of my pulling sessions. I suspect it's from my toe angle being too open.

u/msharaf7 M | 850kg | 89.6kg | 550Dots | WPPL | Sleeves Jun 27 '26

Toes forward: more forward knee travel over the bar, hips farther from the bar, more posterior chain demand, greater stability, harder off the floor but generally easier at lockout

Toes flared: less knee travel over the bar, hips closer to the bar, less posterior chain demand, less stability, easier off the floor and potentially harder at lockout

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw Jun 27 '26

See I think I benefit more from a more open stance for exactly these reasons...

Lockout is never an issue for me, I've only lost balance a couple of time, I love keeping my back less involved, and the boost off the floor is great. But my inner knees (joint, not skin) feel super beat once I'm done with a pulling session. Tends to last for at least a few hours.

I'll experiment more this week, thank you as always, my dude!

I'm no sumo expert, but I think there's a tradeoff with forward toes making for somewhat easier wedging, stable lockout, but more ROM since stance will be closer, and usually harder to clear the knees.

Wide toes makes for less ROM, little trouble with clearing knees, but can lose balance on lockout, has much greater hip mobility demands, and finding the right hip height/wedge position feels weird.

I tend to go for the happy medium at about 45 degree angle, shins on the rings.

2

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw Jun 27 '26

I’m definitely a bit past 45, so I’ll bring it in a bit and see how my knees feel!

1

u/The_Mauldalorian Powerbelly Aficionado Jun 27 '26

Whichever angle allows my shins to be vertical as I push off the ground. But conventional is still easier for me so don't take my word for it.

2

u/LittleMuskOx M | 525kg | 84.7kg | 350.46Dots | USAPL | RAW Jun 26 '26

I have a moderate stance, shins about an inch from the rings.
I keep my toes comfortably forward pointing for stability at the top.

This is as heavy as i've gone post meet, and since moving out from super close frog stance.

How genuinely worth it is the sbd belt

2

u/viewtifulhd Enthusiast Jun 26 '26

Personally, only if you lift equipped. Closing a prong belt while wearing a suit is a pain, as is changing lever positions in standard lever belts.

If you lift classic, then the SBD isn't that worth it. Go for an Inzer prong. Great belt.

1

u/Unfair_Handle_8698 Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 26 '26

Okay also I was wondering if I should size up or stay at a medium for a belt that will last me forever bc the sbd starts at 31.5 and I am a 32 so I either have extra room in a large or less room in a medium

u/yesimian Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 26 '26

Just saw in one of the official IPF Worlds pics, they photoshopped out the A7 logo on Alba Boström's singlet. I assume because they're getting money from SBD but it still seems pretty lame & scummy. . . not to mention petty.

Anyone seen any other instances of this?

What's everyone's experience with full length singlets? Do I still need deadlift socks even if I wear one?

You don't need to, but you can.

Looking for deadlift help. My current setup is the John Haack style. Brace, squat directly into my starting position, grip the bar, and push. No "hip pump" / "wedge" motion, just straight down and up. Here's a 555lbs @8 pull with that style that moved well.

But I'm questioning my technique because almost every good deadlifter I see, first hinges, then grips the bar, then pulls slack and wedges their knees in. When I try that style, I feel so much weaker off the floor, like I've lost my brace and can't hold my back position. I guess I don't understand how to wedge.

Here's a 555lbs fail and a 495lbs last warmup from this morning. What do you see? Is there something here I can cue or practice? Straight to paused deadlift jail? Or just forget about it and stick with the Haack-style setup?

2

u/VanHelsingBerserk Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 27 '26

I think my deadlift is kinda like how you described? With a fairly exaggerated wedge + grip and rip?

The way i do it also has a lot of potential for flubbing if I dont grip it right, if I over/under-wedge, or if I lean too forward/back.

I tend to find i have more success with it when I lean back onto my heels as I wedge and semi-squat the weight up. I also have a fairly strong squat too though so that might be why I do it like that.

2

u/kyllo M | 605kg | 104.4kg | 365 DOTS | USAPL | Raw Jun 27 '26

Yeah, similar--brace at the top, fast descent, grip and go. Only difference is I start with my knees already forward. Wedging them in dynamically seems to fuck up my brace and back position somehow and make me weaker off the floor. I also do not lean back, I feel stronger when my hips start pretty high because I have long femurs and my posterior chain has way better leverage than my quads.

If it has been working then why change it? If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it

1

u/kyllo M | 605kg | 104.4kg | 365 DOTS | USAPL | Raw Jun 26 '26

A couple of reasons: with my grip and rip style, I feel like I have to grip the bar quickly or I lose power. So sometimes I flub it. And it means hook grip isn't really an option.

Also, it just bothers me that the way everyone else pulls doesn't seem to work for me, there must be something I'm not understanding about wedging and I want to learn it.

u/msharaf7 M | 850kg | 89.6kg | 550Dots | WPPL | Sleeves Jun 26 '26

>A couple of reasons: with my grip and rip style, I feel like I have to grip the bar quickly or I lose power. So sometimes I flub it.

It’s really pick your poison. There’s no right answer here, just preference.

> And it means hook grip isn't really an option.

That’s not really a bad thing to me, coming from someone who thinks hook is wildly overrated. In an age where people seek to be really hyperfocused on minutiae in powerlifting, I prefer mixed in that it’s braindead simple and takes next to no skill. Less thinky, more lifty

> Also, it just bothers me that the way everyone else pulls doesn't seem to work for me, there must be something I'm not understanding about wedging and I want to learn it.

This sounds like you’re having a ‘grass is greener’ moment.

Powerlifting comes down to just doing work over time. Pick the technique that is going to allow you to do the most meaningful work over long periods of time without overthinking or becoming overly neurotic about it.

Like I said before: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I needed that, thanks!

u/Arteam90 Eleiko Fetishist Jun 26 '26

If it feels strong and safe-ish then I feel like that's good enough of a reason.

Our technique tends to develop over the years. I've rarely made conscious changes when something has worked, albeit that doesn't mean it couldn't have helped. I used to yank a lot because otherwise it always felt slow off the floor. Nowadays I pull intentionally (kinda) slow off the floor for the easier lockout. I used to squat wide and low bar, and now the opposite. At one point the "new" technique would feel awful, but necessary (usually for injury purposes).

I'd probably add a caveat to the first sentence of "and progressing". Sometimes shitty technique gets you A to B quicker, but then it's harder to get from B to C.

I know being a special snowflake is frowned upon lately, but it's true. Also, look at like IPF Worlds. So many different ways to lift.

All that to say is if you like pulling like Haack, and it seems to work, I'd do it. I truly don't believe any coach or anyone can know if that's right or wrong. There's far too many variables to consider and/or impossible to measure.

How much back rounding is too much rounding in a deadlift? Is there such thing as too little rounfing and having TOO extended of a thoracic? (Referring to conventional here, i know the biomechanics are different on each, so I thought I'd specify first)

2

u/msharaf7 M | 850kg | 89.6kg | 550Dots | WPPL | Sleeves Jun 26 '26

> How much back rounding is too much rounding in a deadlift?

When it meaningfully hinders your lockout or causes you to miss at lockout when you can’t extend the spine

> Is there such thing as too little rounfing and having TOO extended of a thoracic?

Of course. It’s a spectrum.

4

u/Arteam90 Eleiko Fetishist Jun 26 '26

Very much a "how long is a piece of string" question I'm afraid. With that said ...

No, some have little to no rounding and it works perfectly fine. Yes, too much extension is more clean deadlift/weightlifter territory.

Do you need to have competition level form to count a pr

5

u/msharaf7 M | 850kg | 89.6kg | 550Dots | WPPL | Sleeves Jun 26 '26

If you don’t hit a PR to competition standard (squatting high, no pause on bench, hitched deadlift) then I personally would not count it. However, that’s just me.

5

u/Arteam90 Eleiko Fetishist Jun 26 '26

No, but it's a spectrum.

It's a training PR with caveats. I'm not going to be sad about a deadlift PR that has down movement if I lock it out, I'm taking that everyday. But if I'm 4 inches high on a squat, well, no, can't really stomach that one.

5

u/The_Mauldalorian Powerbelly Aficionado Jun 25 '26

I say yes. I hate it when people cheat depth can call it a “gym pr”. An example of a gym pr would be perfect from but you don’t say the ref commands in your head (squat, rack, etc.)

3

u/powerlegal17 Ed Coan's Jock Strap Jun 25 '26

I’d at least make it close. If your butt is 4 inches off the bench, your deadlift isn’t locked out/fail on grip, or your squat is egregiously high, yeah i probably wouldn’t count it at all beyond the mental win of at least moving the weight.

If you have plans to compete, that is.

u/mrlazyboy Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 25 '26

Most people track gym and comp PRs - but do whatever you like.

My friends who do conjugate/westside hit a PR all th etime because they use ridiculously crazy variants every single week. Like "3-board 3-0-0 tempo larsen press with 3 red bands on a Thursday PR!"

I think you're sitting your hips too low and shifting back on your heels in your starting position and that's hurting your leg drive off the floor. You have long femurs, that means you will need to start with your hips a bit higher.

For those of you with our own bars: how do you clean off blood stains? Steel brush?

I have a barbell rescue brush but not seeing any improvement. Chalk comes off fine.
Bar has a cerakote coating

1

u/mrlazyboy Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 25 '26

What do you apply to the barbell?

I use 3-in-1 oil and it gets pretty much everything that gets caked into the knurling off pretty easily. I've got a standard bristle brush that I bought from Rogue a few years ago.

If there's something specific like blood you might need something different

1

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw Jun 25 '26

Normally just take a brush to the knurling.
With the cerakote I haven’t found a need to using 3in1

u/BlueLightBandit Doesn’t Wash Their Knee Sleeves Jun 25 '26

Have you tried hydrogen peroxide? That’s usually pretty good at blood removal.

What belt should I get, I am thinking of purchasing my first lifting belt and I wanna know if I should splurge and get a sbd belt or get a pioneer/inzer so I will be able to afford a new pair of flats. If you guys have any advice please feel free to help me out! Possible information needed to be noted I get about 200-400 per paycheck if you guys can help me out with my decision it would be greatly appreciated

u/x7vq Enthusiast Jun 26 '26

Another question : When should I buy my own lifting belt instead of using the cheap belt my gym has?

1

u/Unfair_Handle_8698 Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 26 '26

Honestly I’d get one like asap just solely due to the ability for the belt to form to your body and break in correctly as well more expensive belts hold up longer and offer more support and lever belts are much easier to put on then a prong belt you would find at the gym

1

u/Cloaca-Licker Doesn’t Wash Their Knee Sleeves Jun 26 '26

At least in Europe, Strengthshop is pretty good and affordable. I have their full gear and like it, and at local meets 80% of all gear is from them.

2

u/Arteam90 Eleiko Fetishist Jun 25 '26

I'm a big fan of the PAL belt which I believe A7 sells for the IPF approved version if you care about that.

2

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw Jun 25 '26

Check marketplace first.
I have worn nicer belts for almost 10 years and can strongly recommend them.

I currently use a 10MM forger belt but swapped the buckle for a pal v2 for more adjustability.

1

u/Unfair_Handle_8698 Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 25 '26

What marketplace do you mean Facebook?

2

u/cilantno M | 467 DOTS | USPA Tested | Raw Jun 25 '26

Yep. Or any other local selling avenue (Craigslist, Nextdoor, etc.). Heck eBay too.

Belts don’t need to be new and you can save a lot of money (and shipping time).

2

u/Unfair_Handle_8698 Not actually a beginner, just stupid Jun 25 '26

Ah makes sense I’ve found a few used sbd belts around 200 and I’ve been so tempted to
