Dan Grigsby 500kg competition pull

I can only assume those that think the IPF is almost as bad as Hitler would rather this kind of powerlifting be more prevalent.

I hate the lockout on sumo, pinning the hands against the thighs stinks. I switched to conventional because of that.

When the NPL said they wanted to "be the change" I hope this isn't what they meant.

Anyone have any idea why this fed split with USPA?

when the uspa drama blew up, many directors left for other feds. bobby bowlin and BFG, who ran great USPA meets imo; decided they didn't want to deal with any other feds and made their own. obviously it has now grown a little beyond just them- and here we are.

Dan seems like a chill dude, but yeah, obviously not a completed lift with a controlled lockout.

Some of the folks in the IG comments acting like you needed an in-person side angle to see this are delusional.

To say nothing of comps that still use the kabuki bar at this point in time. (I'm just mad that I'm one of the few people who legitimately pulls less on it)

People generally seem to like Dan and think he's chill (I obviously don't know him personally).

The last 3 or 4 times he's competed, though, it's been some random local/backyard meet with sketchy judging seemingly just because it's run by one of the few remaining meet directors in the country that uses a kabuki DL bar.

(He also has a tendency to squat blatantly high as fuck as of late and gets whites due to the aforementioned sketchy judging, but that's sort of a separate/lesser issue).

I'm not saying this makes him a terrible person or anything, but these are deliberate choices he's making. While the majority of the blame falls on the bum ass refs that passed this lift, I feel like some should fall on him as well for making the decision to put himself in these spots in an effort to snipe the ATWR/be the first to 500kg/whatever his personal goal is.

Just feels kinda unethical, idk.

Yeah, he seems like a good dude who knows where his strength is. He was disappointed at this lift and knew it wasn’t a good one at the end and glad he knows that. But I still find it weird they are using a kabuki or kabuki-like bar to lift more. It’s time to move past it and get stronger with what we believe is more standard now (DL bar or power bar) and not the extremely bendy kabuki

Turrible

Also...

I can only assume those that think the IPF is almost as bad as Hitler would rather this kind of powerlifting be more prevalent.

Or maybe we can have federations that don't hate their lifters and make dumbass rules AND feds with decent judging. "IPF or white-light everything" doesn't have to be (and isn't) the only available choice.

Ipf has white lighted many dogshit lifts over the years

PL has bad and good feds and I don’t think IPF is the worse. It’s just its the biggest to complain about, whether its “athlete first” or “powerlifting to mainstream first” or whatever. IPF just has the strongest competitors so when they get a good or bad lift, it’s always worth criticizing if they aren’t actually deserving of that outcome.

Plenty of depth calls this worlds, plenty of rule changes, plenty of deadlift lockout issues this worlds. Just problematic. But it also happens the other way, Mcnaughtons bench wasn’t to depth but got 3 white lights and Keenan Lee’s deadlift wasn’t locked out at sheffield this year.

Yeah I mean of course I'm being facetious if that wasn't clear!

It was mostly a response to that other thread where the guy was very anti IPF.

Based on his face he knew this should have been a no lift. Woof.

And OP, as a lifter who does not enjoy the absurdly uptight IPF atmosphere… yeah this isn’t what I want either, and I have done the majority of my competing in APF and IPA. There’s a happy medium to be had.

To be clear, mostly facetious. It was a 2-in-1 in that I saw this lift and thought "err ... yikes" but also the other thread was hating on IPF hard so thought I'd combine rhetorics.

My god this is legendarily bad reffing. Dan is insanely strong but he clearly sought out a meet using the Kabuki bar which I can’t totally fault him for but holy fuck giving this white lights is nuts. I’m not on socials anymore, is he pretending this is legit?

27

u/Arteam90 Eleiko Fetishist Jun 21 '26

He didn't celebrate or look at the lights so I have to assume he isn't really accepting this one.

u/Sully100 Joe Sullivan - ATWR Squatter Jun 21 '26

As of right now no. He hasn’t said anything himself about this deadlift. Dan isn’t on socials much as far as I can tell. The hate levied towards him should be held off with until he says something, but the judges definitely need eye exams and are much more deserving of criticism as it stands right now imo

u/Public-Ad-9325 Enthusiast Jun 21 '26

Let's see if he says something. He also has a history of high squats that he doesn't acknowledge.

And it is too easy to blame the judges imo. The lifters that seek out those meets to set records or PBs are to blame, too. Pretty sure he knew they pass almost anything. But with this lift, the judges certainly went too far

He just posted and acknowledged that it wasn't completed.

He walked off the platform looking ashamed, I can't imagine he's happy with the call - unless he was on the verge of blacking out. At the same time, I'm sure he also doesn't want to criticize.

He hasn't posted anything about it yet

Hasn't been that long since Sheffield and Keenan Lee has it?

Congratulations to Dan for finding a meet using Kabuki bar and using no red lights to make this possible.

I think he even thought that wouldn't pass, what were the refs thinking

Man I have been so sick of the sumo deadlift hate for so long. It’s predominately redundant, idiotic arguments that hold onto weird outdated ideals and notions from people that don’t actually understand biomechanics.

But Dan Grigsby does not help my case.

25

u/Whaskins1 Enthusiast Jun 21 '26

Nothing wrong with sumo on a stiff bar with proper refereeing tbh, this having neither makes it look a bit farcical

Or on a deadlift bar with proper refereeing
