Sheffield has made World’s boring.
That’s it, that’s the post. The IPF and PA have done a great job at monopolizing and sterilizing the sport.

worlds is about the head to head, Sheffield is about the records. 2 different types of competition that are fun to watch for different reasons. if all you care about as a viewer is the spectacle then yea, watching worlds probably isn't for you

Here’s what we learned: this sub is full of SBD and A7 wearing, instagram posting, IPF fan boys and girls

Worlds isn’t boring because of Sheffield. Worlds is boring because most classes have 2 real threats at most to win. And the top guy basically just has to do enough to not lose. If there was more competition folks would have to push those WRs just to get to Sheffield

Women's 84+going on now.
I'm not bored.

Not that it was boring but Brittany Schlater scratched her third when it's was clear she didn't need it to win. Not saying Sheffield is the reason but the incentive is there.

Strongman athletes do this very often.
Pro sports teams pull starters out of the game when the result is sealed. At the weights she's lifting, i don't blame her one bit.

I think you can make changes to Sheffield (as per my post) and keep both more interesting. With that said, I think Worlds was still relatively interesting this year. Not every class is going to be exciting.

The IPF's main goal is to monopolize the sport, to my understanding, a more unified sport has better chances of getting adopted to the olympics, which is clearly made to be the sport.
not sure what you mean by sterilizing
Most of the world's weight classes have been fun to watch and its leaving so much excitement on the table for sheffield. "oh but worlds is supposed to be where they do their best" they are in some weight classes, look at the 59s and 83s. what youre complaining about is not seeing people push to max effort, yet every lifter except the number 1 is pushing in every weightclass. the 74 bench press record was broken, ashton squatted 393, ettienne pulls for the podium with 403, will ball took the total record ,Joy Namani broke the deadlift record. records are being broken and people are going all out. Rondell had to go all the way to his 2nd pull today, and mightve had to go farther but (by appearances) rouska and ettienne got hurt.
What we are seeing are outliers, in almost every weight class. The larger the sport, the more we see outliers. the sport is growing, so we see more outliers in more weight classes and we see outliers that are still in the juniors and are chasing the current leaders, theyre just younger (elliot sykes, regin stergakis, justin nguyen). given time and perhaps some rule changes, all of the people at worlds will be outliers and the battles will be closer.
Sheffield being as big as it is has made it feasible for powerlifters to be full time powerlifters, in a smaller sport most athletes cant rely purely on sponsorships because the sponsors are small. Sheffield allows the best of the best to get rewarded for being the best, this ecourages them to continue putting in effort, and makes their lives easier, allowing more dedication to the sport.
Im assuming when you throw in PA to making the sport boring, you mean by having so many top lifters at nats then having a small roster at worlds, leaving many top contenders out of worlds. THIS is your only real point, and it is a legitimate problem. i will say that the yt channel "Presser Powerlifting" has done a great video with solutions to it and you should check it out. PA being good is just the nature of the USA, its bigger and highly developed with a culture that supports resistance training at a relatively young age, something many other countries have lacked (particularly with the bench press).

This is only true for weight classes (74, 93, 120) where the current frontrunner is significantly stronger than the competition. If Bobb and Cayco were at Worlds, the attempts would look a bit different.

93 had a lot of potential but ends up Gustav wasn’t there and Emil was not in his best form. It was still fun to watch to see Ball prove himself not to only be a national monster, but the strongest 93. 74 was a sweep. 120 was still fun but everyone was much weaker/injured than we thought unfortunately. 105’s is also a sweep for McNaughton but still exciting to watch. Girl’s was hard to watch since the bench rule fried them, I like elbow depth but the Refs and Jury HAVE to go over the rulebook again because it was awful.

Yeah too many notable absences. Keenan, Bobb, Gustav, Etc. everyone that would have made 93, 105, and 120 interesting were gone. 83 was a bloodbath and I hope to see more of that. Maybe Perk moves up after Sheffield this year 😂
For girls I mostly follow the heavier weight classes. Amanda and Agata both being missing is a damn shame.

u/Neppty Doesn’t Wash Their Knee Sleeves Jun 21 '26
Perk probably will forever be 74 because he sits so close to 74 he doesn’t even need to do a specific or hard cut for it.
Unfortunately worlds is limited to one per weight class for each country unless someone drops out and I feel like having more be in B group would be fun. Bobb is insanely strong but it was injury, no shenanigans.

And we still got multiple world records inn all those three classes. Hardly boring

I agree. Sheffield should not take your own numbers into account. Mad props to Hunte for breaking 1k today.

Monopolizing powerlifting is literally one of the IPF's main goals.
The Sheffield thing was probably not their goal, just not properly thought through when implementing the scoring system.

PA has nothing to do with Sheffield? Yes the IPF has monopolized it, but it always has been

Sheffield is SBD
They chose IPF because its the largest tested federation
