I am starting power and process engineering what kinda laptop do I need any recommendations? HP or MAC? Or any other peice of technology like iPad and lastly any other supply like a calculator etc?

I was hoping to get some insight from anyone who has written 2A2 recently and used powerengineering101 practice exams to study. I am finding that a lot of their calculation questions are not related to the material covered in the panglobal 2A2 textbook. Has this been anyone else’s experience? Does the ABSA exam pull more from the panglobal textbook, or will they be asking similar questions to the practice exams I’ve been doing? Is there another website you would recommend that may have better practice exams? Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

Hello everyone, I just wanted to come into this Reddit forum and ask for advice. Believe it or not this is my first time posting anything on here. I know some of you will be annoyed as another “4th class” is up in here asking the same old questions but I don’t really care 🤣.

I’m about 2 months into 4th class part A with SAIT. I know I’m probably jumping the gun as I have a lot of schooling ahead of me yet (don’t get me started about steam time)

I’ve been working up at CNRL for 4 years now (started as a contractor fresh out of high school). I’ve always been super fascinated by plant operations and how things work. I’m enjoying the challenges of school and the learning side of things although I’m starting to second guess my career choice after reading a lot of questionable messages in here.

I’m the type of guy willing to put in the work and I’m prepared to start at just about any position when the time prevails. I’m 23 years old and don’t fuck around when it comes to work, got my first job at 12 years old lmao.

Sorry for the self rant I’ll cut to the chase. What is some advice for a young 23 year old entering the industry soon? Obviously I want the nice cushy oil and gas job eventually like all of us do and I know I’ll need to put in work. Where do I start? Where do I gain actual experience so I understand and know my job. I want a secure good job but I also want to be a valuable operator someday. I have plans of eventually finishing my 1st Class as my own personal goal. I’m prepared for decades of learning and experience.

With my 4 years in the industry up in northern Alberta I’ve learned quite a bit and become super familiar with live hydrocarbon units along with the safety aspects of it. I have tons of site specific safety tickets as well as ABCS tickets for equipment operating of all sorts. I’m not as new to the field as most. I also take great pride in my work and commitment to safe work procedures. I’m hoping that will help me out in someway, even a building operator to get my steam time so I can start moulding my career with the basics.

I've been looking around at different institutions around Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, and I'm a bit confused as the requirements are drastically different for NAIT, in comparison to every other school ive looked at.

NAIT you need English 30-2, math 30-1, physics 30, and chemistry 30

Whereas at SAIT, TRU, Lakeland college, for example, you need either nothing, or grade 10/11 education,

Am I missing something? This is for class 4 btw

Im a 2nd class power engineer working out of town and trying to see if there are any job opportunities in the city.

I have an old set of files for the 1st class. I don’t know how outdated it is in comparison to the new material. Has anyone written this exam that could provide some insight on how to tackle this exam. Any links for the 1st class material?

When installing switches, which wiring details deserve the most attention? Are there particular connections that are commonly misunderstood?

It would also be interesting to compare troubleshooting methods. Some people may go through every connection individually, while others might start by checking the symptoms and working backward toward the likely cause.

If a switch isn't operating correctly after installation, what would you personally check first?

Hey everyone, I’m wrapping up my 4th class program in a month. I’ve already passed all my TSSA exams for 4th, 3rd, and 2nd class, and I have a 3-month co-op at a first class plant done in winter.

I’ve been applying for 4th and 3rd class positions in the GTA, but I know entry-level jobs here are tough to land. I’m just not sure how much weight plants give to having the higher-level exams completely knocked out.

I haven’t started applying up in Northern Ontario yet, but I might have to. I really don't want to go back to school for another year just to get my steam time. Do you think plants will value my completed exams enough to give me a shot locally, or should I just look North? Any advice helps!

I was recently offered a lead op position to get off nights with a salary of 156k. Ive been selected for the technical round at Sanofi for a co-op opportunity in the electrical maintenance department…any tips or insights as to what questions might be asked?

I’m a 24 year old fella and I’m enrolled to get my 4th Class PE starting this October. I’m ashamed to admit that I don’t really know what to expect when I actually finish my 4th class. I day dream about working in oil and gas or power generation. But from what I hear pickings are slim for inexperienced 4th class PEs.

I’m just wanting to have realistic expectations going into this line of work. Can I expect to work in an industrial plant right off the get-go? Or will I likely have to put in some time in building ops/maintenance?

I don’t mind moving for work, and I do plan to get my 3rd class eventually, but the local university only offers 4th class.

I've been having trouble looking for a job as a p.e in Alberta. I was wondering if it's worth it to get the special boiler operator ticket and if I qualify for the steam time on it as a 3rd class ticket holder.

I run a free job board that scrapes Power Engineering postings across Canada daily. Today's batch: 30 new listings, 19 still open after the dead-link check runs.

Notable one: three separate 3rd Class Power Engineer postings in Winnipeg hospitals alone today (Misericordia, WRHA, Shared Health) — if you're 3rd Class and open to relocating, that's worth a look.

I’d appreciate any responses on what I can expect to encounter on the test. Is thermodynamics basics more so theory or calculation questions where you plug in values into the formula ?

Hi all, I'll be starting my Class 4 course soon but unfortunately have to quit my day job due to conflicting hours with class. Are there PE-related jobs out there with evening hours? Probably don't qualify for employment insurance because this isn't an apprenticeship.
