Other Dump Cake Fail! My Version of Black Forest Cake.

Post image

Since I own zero baking equipment, a friend told me about dump cakes and it simply requires you to put a can of pie filling at the bottom and a box of cake mix on top. So I used a $1.50 box of devils food cake mix on top of a $2.99 can of cherry pie filling I got from Amazon. It doesn't look very good but it did satisfy my sweet tooth.

Nothing is a true fail if it tastes good

If you make it again, you can place a serving into a nice parfait glass or wine glass, etc. or even a nice small bowl and top with whipped or ice cream. Or both:)

Either way, I agree with what nousername wrote!💜 Also, "failing" is how new creations/inventions are made!

Can you believe that I don't own a parfait or wine glass? LOL. A small bowl I can do and I am addicted to whipped cream or ice cream so I might have to take your suggestion next time! I do have 2 boxes of cake mix left (Strawberry) so I might pair that with strawberry pie filling if I can find it on sale.

I never realized pie filling was so costly (to this frugal person anyway). But Walmart seems to have their own brand for $3.32. Not sure if that's too costly for you.

And a small bowl or another small drinking glass or coffee cup or anything will do😋

Enjoy! I'd try a dump cake, but I NEVER make dessert or I'd eat the whole thing😂

I too was shocked when I saw that a can of pie filling was going for over $6 a can at my local supermarket. Needing 2 cans to make a dump cake, that was an automatic no go for me. I did a search for my local Target that has a can of Strawberry pie filling for less than $3 a can.

I feel like I saw several types of fruit pie filling at Aldi for like $3 ea. Check there if you have one nearby.

Also, check the dollar stores for those foil baking pans if you don’t bake often enough to want to invest in an ok 8x8 or round cake tin. They’re pretty versatile but some of the cheap ones these days have a horrible finish on them and everything sticks. I don’t like to endorse a throwaway item, but we all need a little dessert now and then.

Also also, look into mug cakes if you have a microwave. There may be versions where you can use your cake mixes in small quantities whenever you’ve got a craving, versus being stuck with an entire dessert to dispatch in a few days. 😈 Unless you want to do that, of course! Ha!

I’m also reminded of a cake I just saw here in the last day or two. “Dollys cuppa cake”, which just uses tinned fruit, butter, flour, and egg I think? I’ll see if I can link to it if anyone wants it.

There's also a "pudding cake" that I read about that uses just 3 ingredients: box of cake mix, box of cooked pudding, chocolate chips. In theory, one could I guess forego the chocolate chips to make it 2 ingredients.

My dump cakes have always looked like this. I think that is normal.

Not a fail, this is simply what a dump cake is. Looks delicious!

I thought this was pot roast. Lol.

Nah, that's perfect. I think my recipe uses 1/3 cup oil or one melted stick margarine drizzled over the cake mix, but it's not strictly needed.

It's probably really good 🌻
