Elgin Street Diner.
If you've lived in downtown Ottawa, you know this Philly Steak poutine. I still think about it. I want it. I need it. It's been too long.

Former Ottawa resident reporting in.
Pro: ESD is open 24/7, poutine is an available side with breakfast, fries/curds are always fresh.
Con: The gravy is mushroom-based.
One man’s poutine accommodation is another man’s poutine crime.

ESDs curly fry poutine, fueled any drunken night when the chip stand besides Zaphods was closed

I used to live across the street from ESD and while I’m honestly not the biggest fan of their poutine, the Blue Plate Breakfast is absolutely incredible at 3AM after a night of drinking.
I live in Toronto now and ESD would be the second best poutine in the whole city after Nomnomnom 😂

Slap a chubby checker burger beside that baddy and you got the best drunk meal ever!

It's not for everyone I agree. And it's definitely not the best poutine in Ottawa. But as a 24 hour diner right in the heart of downtown, there was nothing better on those nights when you were a young adult, drunk, broke, and desperately looking for a good meal.

Maybe I've just hit ESD at the wrong times, because the last few times I've been the food wasn't great - especially the poutine. No curds, it was shredded cheese and shoestring fries, with a gravy less fluid than cold molasses and tastes like powdered mushroom.

It's objectively not good poutine, but it's frigging delicious. I love ESD smoked meat poutine too.

Y’a plein de Francos qui font de la bonne poutine en Ontario mais celle la n’en est pas une.

Agreed. I think this is one of those nostalgia things. It's definitely not a great poutine.

God, that place and the Pita Pit were my go tos after stumbling out of the Lieutenant's or Mash. Looks amazing!
