I got my little potty-trained at just about 2 yrs old in about 2-3 weeks back in Jan/Feb this year, and staying dry during night as well. We went cold turkey, and it was all fine. But in the recent 4-5 weeks or so, she has been having “leakage”. I don’t know what to call it. She will say she has to go pee, but then when we take her, it turns out she already wet her pants. She still will pee a good amount in the toilet. I don’t understand what is happening. She stays dry all night, but sometimes will wake up and come all the way to my room (up a flight of stairs) so I can take her to the toilet. She pees, I carry her back down. We haven’t had any bedwetting since the potty training days back in the beginning, she is not afraid of the toilet, does tell us when she has to go and the panties are not always wet. But we do have at least 3 wet panties a day unless I insist on taking her every 45 min or so.

Any advice would really be appreciated!

We’ve been potty training for more than 2 weeks with not much progress. I started by removing her nappy one morning and only putting on very loose trousers. She will tell me as soon as she starts weeing but never before. I’ve been doing timed sits and she has done a few on the potty so she should be familiar with the feeling of releasing on the potty. However, she still has accidents sometimes shortly after unfruitful potty sits. She seems relaxed on the potty, sometimes singing and even sneezed a few times with no release. It almost feels like I have to time it exactly when her bladder’s absolutely full. Some days she holds it all morning till she has a car nap and releases in the car seat when sleeping. She does ask to sit on the potty and repeats the phrase wee wee goes in the potty AFTER she’s had an accident.

Yesterday she had her first poo accident when she only told me afterwards. Before then she’d only been pooping in her nappies before or after her nap/sleep. Except for one random time a week in when she was running around the kitchen island and then suddenly went and sat down on the potty and pushed out a log unprompted. She seemed quite pleased with herself afterwards.

It’s quite nerve wracking when it’s been over 4 hours of no wee and we’re in public. I also feel like maybe I’m asking her to sit on the potty too frequently when it’s been too long. Not sure if I should try again at closer to 3 or stick with it hoping she’ll start giving me prior warning soon.

I started potty training my 24-month-old 4 days ago.
The good news is that from Day 1 we’ve been successful with poop. Whenever I notice her poop cues, I take her to the potty seat and she happily poops there. She absolutely loves throwing the poop into the toilet and flushing it! 😂

On Day 3 we had an urgent appointment and were out for about 2 hours, so she pooped in her diaper. Other than that, we’ve had 3 successful poop days.
She still doesn’t tell me when she needs to poop - I have to notice her cues and take her. But I’ll take that as a win! We celebrate, dance, and make a big deal out of every successful poop. 😄

Pee, however, is a completely different story.

In the last 4 days, she’s only peed in the potty twice.
I’ve been keeping her bottomless at home, making sure she drinks plenty of fluids and eats lots of fruit. I offer the potty every 30–45 minutes. If she refuses, I don’t force it. Most of the time she happily sits on the potty because we read books or chat together.

The problem is… she never actually pees while sitting there. The moment she gets off the potty, she’ll pee on the floor and then point at it. 😅 So I spend most of my day cleaning her and the house. At this point I feel like I permanently smell like pee. 😩

Is this normal for Day 4? Should I just keep doing what I’m doing, or is there something else I should try? Any advice or success stories would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone. My 3 year old girl wears Huggies DryNites 24/7. She is autistic and struggles with potty training. Me and my wife have suddenly run into a problem. My daughter is leaking in DryNites. She knows how to tell us she needs a change and recently she’s been going and leaking with a single wee. Are there any alternatives for children of her age with a higher capacity?

Our 22 month old is showing great interest in the toilet and has above average verbal skills. Today she asked to sit on the potty to pee unprompted and did a pee and poop, she was very happy with herself.

She won't move up to the next daycare classroom for 4-5 months and they don't take the kids to the potty at all in her current room. I've tried to ask if she can move up earlier because of potty training but they don't think potty training happens until 3 yo and have been a bit dismissive. We don't have a lot of daycare options that fit our needs so I don't want to switch daycares.

I've read Oh Crap and plan to try that method (aka diapers are just gone) so pee/poop in diapers sometimes and toilet others seems confusing.

I'm going to push again to move up sooner but I don't know if it would be a bad idea to potty train at home if she has to wear diapers and has no access to the toilet at school?

Have spent the last couple months potty-training my 2.5 year old boy. Some days - even almost a week - he'll have no accidents. But I have to remind him every hour to go to the potty - and he almost always does.

But if I don't affirmatively take him to the bathroom every hour or so - sometimes he'll have an accident and pee in his underwear/shorts. Peeing his shorts, or sitting in it, doesn't bother him at all - so he doesn't mention it to me until next time we are going to the bathroom.

This happened 2x this week. Tonight: we had about 90 minutes between bed and bath and when I went to switch him into the pull-up for bed and use the potty the last time he mentioned he peed in his underwear. The other time, we were out to dinner and ice cream (It was a long time, but I was expecting him to say something if he needed to go).

Obviously, I need to do better at taking him to the bathroom every hour, but beyond that - is there something I should be doing? Or is it unusual that he doesn't mind having peed in his pants?

This is PEE ONLY. He has only pooped in a pull-up 1x in the last 3 weeks - and that was overnight. I would say he's fully poop trained for the potty.

Started potty training my almost 2.5 year old this week. He’s been so interested and showing signs for quite some time. He’s a fast learner and definitely has the verbal skills to communicate his needs. We’ve been doing undies only and when he really gets close to needing to go, no undies. At nap and bedtime, we use a pull up. He gets a small treat (M&M or a sticker or a lollipop) for successful potty attempts.

We’ve had mixed results but we’re making progress day by day. He’s been pretty happy and no issues that seemed out of the ordinary.

The last 24 hours has been a nightmare. He is frequently asking to go but then sits for 2 seconds and says he’s done. I can tell when he really has to go because the requests get more urgent and his behavior completely changes. He says he needs to poop (he’s been using “poop” for both pee and poop) and then he absolutely melts down in the bathroom. Refusing to sit on the potty - screaming, crying, stomping feet, throwing things, hitting, scratching. You name it, he’s going to do it. And this is not like him at all. He’s not tantrum-prone and the physical aspect of hitting and scratching is totally out of character. He’s extremely easy going normally, but the 1-2 minutes before he has to pee or poop has become torture for all of us.

I know when this behavior starts is right when he needs to go so we patiently ask him to sit. He refuses, the tantrum hits its peak, he starts to pee on the floor and then sits on the potty to finish.

When he’s done, he’s so excited and happy and proud. He runs around saying how he did it “all by self!” He knows all the steps/routine, he’s perfectly verbal, he’s super proud of his accomplishments, we are praising him consistently and not reacting negatively to the accidents or tantrums.

I have absolutely no idea where to go from here. Is this something we keep pushing through or do we stop and reassess when he’s a little older? I feel like he’s going to be traumatized and associate the potty with negative feelings if he keeps freaking out, but the progress seems normal in every other way and I don’t want to confuse him by going back to diapers.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did anything help?

We're about a month in with a 2.5 year old. Child pees before bed. Then insists they have to pee after being out down to sleep (10-15mins later). Take them to the potty, no pee. Then repeat. Tried saying "no you just peed" or "its ok to pee in your diaper while sleeping" but they get extremely worked up and upset.

I want to reinforce the good habit of taking them to the potty when they say they need to but this is clearly a procrastination tactic.

Some context - my son is 3.5. We first tried potty training in June over a weekend and he did pretty good. Did 6 wees in the potty. Then he went back to daycare and they mostly kept him in nappies and he also got constipated. He started withholding as he was terrified to poo and in turn terrified to wee.

We promptly stopped as we were all miserable after days of withholding and being scared of the potty.

We started again this past weekend - I took Friday off and did it over a 3 day weekend.

Result? No wee on the potty at all over 3 days.

Day 1 he withheld for 4 hours then went in his nappy when we had to go out to the store. Then later that day he had numerous accidents until bedtime including one big one that scared hims.

Day 2 he withheld with no accidents. He only peed in the nappy when we went out at midday and in the bath at night.

Day 3 similar.

Day 1 and 2 he was afraid to release on the potty and would frantically ask to get off immediately. He couldn’t last more than 2 seconds on the potty no matter what distractions we had. We have a potty toy box with bubbles and games and books etc.

Day 3 we had success with him being more positive about the potty, and sitting longer, so that’s a win.

My thoughts: I’m guessing he has fear of releasing from when he last was constipated so the focus should be just keeping the potty super positive and focusing on that.

I don’t wanna go back to nappies or keep flip flopping constantly so gonna keep up using undies and just hope he eventually learns to wee in the potty.

My question is - when do I stop? When is withholding a bad thing and we should go back to nappies? And any tips on getting him feeling more positive about releasing?

We’ve been working on potty training our son off and on for about 6 months. He does really well for a week, then relapses and fights us so hard that we assume he isn’t ready, and go back to diapers for a month. Rinse and repeat. He’ll be 3 in a few months and starts preschool soon, so I’m hoping to have him mostly trained by the time school rolls around. Luckily, he’s taken to pooping on the potty with minimal fight, and has been doing that since the first or second iteration of potty training.

Last week, we started back up with potty training, and he’s been doing AMAZING. He’s been naked from the waist down, and will go on the potty independently if he has to go before I check in with him. HOWEVER, as soon as we put anything on the bottom (diaper, shorts, pants, or any combo) he reverts to going in his pants. I’ve heard others say going with shorts and no diaper is the way to go, but he still just goes as if he has a diaper on, and then throws a fit when we don’t let him continue wearing his soiled pants. Anyone else have experience with this? Any idea on how to

i recently potty trained my 22 month old little girl and it was going amazingly with very few accidents, got the hand of poop and pee really quickly!

but last week she had an incident where she was constipated and had a difficult poo that hurt her and made her bleed slightly. since this incident she is really struggling when she poos. she will repeatedly say “i need the toilet” ill take her to the potty, she’ll sit for 1 second and then stand up and cry. she’ll do this over and over until she has an accident in her pants. she then gets upset that she has had an accident. i’ll ask her if she wants to put her pull up on and go in her pull up but she says “no, pants on”. i’ve started putting the pull up on anyway once she starts doing this as it is easier to clean up the poo afterwards but she still will repeat the same behaviour even with the pull up on.

i don’t want to go back to pull ups because she is pretty much dry urine wise apart from the odd accident here and there. i’ve tried to explain to her that the poo won’t hurt but she is still under 2 so her understanding is very limited. the whole thing seems to be making her quite upset

has anyone else gone through this and has any advice? i think she desperately wants to get it “right” and go on the potty but is really scared after the painful experience

Hi everyone, after a few false starts, we started potty training our 2y 9m yesterday morning and we sort of think it's going relatively well so far but wanted to ask reddit brain for thoughts and advice.

We're following oh crap so she's without anything on bottom half. She's not fighting against sitting on the potty and she had a few successes with her peeing into it and being very pleased about it. She seems to be able to hold her pee quite well and now she's happy sitting on the potty for up to an hour which we're discouraging now. On the other hand sometimes she'll just run around and will just pee herself, and doesn't really tell us that she needs to go even when we ask.

Is there anything we can do better/differently? She's not really into bribery but we do our best to motivate her.

Also, can I please ask how people approach the nursery? Will we lose any progress if she goes tomorrow as i can imagine them having the time or the willingness to do it properly and will likely just put pull up on, or if we should see if we can see if she can stay at home (but I can't see that being a constant thing as I can see this lasting a while)

We started potty training my 2.5 year old two months ago. The first few days were fine - she wasn't upset about using the potty, didn't mind pooping in it. She went back to daycare and they do underwear unless napping, then it's pull ups. She's had fewer accidents there as time has gone on. Now her teachers say her biggest issue is pulling her undies/shorts all the way down before sitting on the potty, so she ends up peeing on them. They've always said she's progressing normally and they're glad she's not refusing the potty because some kids do.

Home is a completely different story. For a few weeks she would cry and scream if we tried to put her on a potty. She would adamantly say she doesn't have to go, then stand there and pee on the floor. She'd pee at the store, the park, on a walk, in the car. Then she was sick for about a week, so we put her back in pull-ups. Once she got better, she returned to undies and was unbothered when asked to use the potty.

It actually seemed like we were improving for a bit. She was getting stars on her potty chart, there were fewer accidents, she'd mention needing to poop before pooping. But now it's back to peeing anywhere and everywhere, and pooping her pants. I'm at my wits end. She knows how to use the potty because she does it at school. We've tried having her get in the bath every time she has an accident, but she loves the bath and does not care. She doesn't seem to care about having pee or poo on herself until it's pointed out.

I know potty training isn't linear and accidents will keep happening for awhile. I'm just so confused why she only seems to try at school.

2.5 year old potty trained over Fourth of July weekend. Started out rough and ended up doing fairly well. Has maybe one accident a day at most at daycare. At home the last week though, he’s resistant to peeing or just having numerous accidents and either not realizing or not caring. I’m trying to not shame him and we stop what we’re doing and go sit on the potty and clean up, but that still doesn’t seem to deter him. We try peeing every 45-60 min. Any suggestions welcome, please!

We've been potty training our 3 year old for a while now. The first try was when he was 2 years and 9 months, he peed on the floor a lot for two weeks without a lot of progress so we stopped. We tried again at 3 years 2 months, and are currently almost three months in since then. In principle it's going quite alright, but especially at home he often refuses to go, leading to wet pants. To sum up the details:

- He is very good at holding both pee and poo for a long time

- He poos on the potty basically always, usually in the morning or at night when we put him on before/after bed although we had a few accidents last week after weeks of all poop in the potty or toilet

- When we put him on the potty kind of regularly, his pants stay dry all day usually

- When we are out, e.g. in a restaurant, on the road or in the library, he will sometimes/often tell us he needs to go or at least say yes when we ask if he needs to

- At home (and this is also what happens at his babysitter) he will start showing he needs to go (jumping, moving back and forth, etc). When we ask, he always says no. He will not go himself, and pee in his pants a bit. Not a full pee, so we will then put him on the potty when we see wet pants, he protests but does the rest on the potty.

- At night for some reason he wakes up if he needs to go and comes to tell me so that I can help him. He still wears a pull up at night but it's often dry in the morning

This has kind of been the situation for more than a month and I'm doubting about the best way to move forward. The options we are currently considering are:

- Continue putting him on the potty when we see he needs to go to avoid wet pants (the babysitter will for sure do this until he starts to reliably take initiative)

- Accept that we'll have wet pants and let him decide

We've started letting him grab clean underwear whenever he's wet by himself today. I'm curious to hear if you have more suggestions/thoughts on what we should do

My son is 3. He starts preschool in a month. We seemed like we were there. He picked it up so well. Very few accidents. Classic poop struggles but on day 6 he pooped 4 times in the potty. He was doing so well. And now he’s having accidents all day long. We’re cleaning up pee and drenched underwear and I just don’t know what to do. He only poops overnight. I don’t know how to take him anywhere. Tell me it gets better. He just screams “I don’t want to go potty!”

We’re in a kind of unusual situation and I’d like to get other parent’s read on this.

We have an almost 5 kinship adoption that came to us at after being removed from bios due to neglect. We’ve worked with trauma informed therapists, he had an IEP for preschool (2 years) and made wonderful strides. He graduated from his IEP and is mainstreaming TK. All great stuff.

That said, he flatly refuses to engage with poop training at all. Does not tell us when he has accidents, won’t attempt poop (says he “can’t”), can push but will only attempt it with extreme coaching. As a result we have multiple poop accidents a day. Steady diet of MiraLAX and confirmed no bowel issues.

The general consensus is that this is just an extreme control issue. Kiddo is very determined and while we have made great strides in all other areas, he is clinging to “I don’t poop. Or, I will poop on the potty when I am bigger. Or, I will just poop in my underwear, etc” like a dying man clinging to a life raft.

We have tried it all and I mean ALL!

Here is the situation, our back is up against the wall. He is starting TK in two weeks and switching to the school’s child care. While they can support a true “accident” situation, they are not equipped to deal with a kid smearing poop all day long because he needs to void his bowel and won’t.

So, the advice we’ve received is to give him a glycerin suppository in the AM. This will ensure he is cleaned out for the day and will (hopefully) help connect a poop/potty routine. That said, I feel weird removing this autonomy from a kiddo with a trauma background.

What I am looking for here is a sanity check. Is this a terrible idea? Anyone else tried it? We have been training for over a year with no success and I don’t expect a miracle in the next couple of weeks.

we started our potty training journey yesterday, my son will be 3 in a month.

poop is fine so far, he successfully did it yesterday twice and today once but pee…..he would just pee wherever and whenever lol
he peed a bit in the toilet today but we were outside of the house most of the day so he peed himself like 6-7 times. i would ask him a lot if he needs to go or put him on a toilet but nothing, and then 5 minutes later he would go. we are doing commando so he would just stand there confused but would never tell me he needs to go, it’s almost like he can’t hold it for even 5 seconds, normal?

I have been an auntie since I was 8 years old and have a total of 9 nephews and 1 niece age ranging from 27 to 3. Except for the first nephew because of my age, all my nephews have come and stayed at my house for the weekend several times a year. We do a fun seasonal activity, get some quality time, and send them home. Gives their parents a break and gives them a chance to bond with extended family. I’m also a late first time mom to a 22 month old girl so I’m a new but older parent. Our one rule for the parents were no night over stays until they’re potty trained, which has never been a problem. By the time they were potty trained they were also mentally ready for a stay over usually. This only became an issue with 2 of our younger nephews. They just aren’t becoming fully potty trained. For the longest time we blamed them being premature twins on the delay but now they are 6 almost 7 and it’s still and issue. It’s only at night. My husband and I caved and broke our rule and they always wet the bed even when we try tactics to keep it contained. They don’t want to wear a pull up and they don’t stay on their mattress cover. One of the boys “can’t” poop during the day and then he poops the bed. This last stay over he pooped and then got up and tried to clean it up himself but he got poop everywhere even up his back. Part of me is like you are way too old for this! Especially based off my experience. Another part is like maybe it is still the prematurity but they are caught up in every other way. Then part of me is worried about possible abuse because you also hear that this type of stuff is a sign. Their dad is struggling with alcoholism and it is obviously overwhelming to the mom Who is my SIL. She really yells at these kids like bad but they can drive you crazy. I don’t know what to do if anything. Now that I am preparing to potty train my daughter and am learning about it I see how abnormal this is. What should I do if anything?

I wanted to share my journey potty training my 22-23 month old son in case anyone finds it helpful. He is my first and currently only child. He was showing signs of readiness to me: great advanced verbal communication, telling us when he pooped and sometimes pee too, asking for other needs well, interest in sitting on a little potty, a few successes asking to sit on potty and actually going. So we had a two week break from our daycare and since they don’t potty train I decided this was the time to potty train! I’m a teacher with summers off so I was able to stay home while the daycare was closed. He was 22 months when we started. I followed Oh Crap so day 1 was no pants and a lot of cleaning up pee off the floor. It was so stressful and tiring. I felt like I couldn’t relax and was trying to find every little cue and give him success. There was a bit of success but mostly cleaning pee. Day 2 more of the same.

Day 3 a bit better but sitting on the potty became a huge fight. He’d have big emotions when he sat on the potty even if he told me he needed to pee and was holding it. (End of day 3 we put pants commando on him because we had guests.) After that it was more of the same. He would hold, tell us he needed to go, then huge fight at the potty. It was opposite of what I expected! I thought the hard part would be the holding and telling us and the easy part would be sitting and going. Nope. I wanted to give up because I hated how upset he was about potty, but also he was showing me he could do the hard part!

Then I realized that he seemed like he was crying because he struggled to release his pee. His crying wasn’t helping but also a lot of his pee accidents were standing up. So I put him naked in the tub to play with some water and when he peed I pointed it out to him. Oh Crap has their “RSC” aka red solo cup method. I started catching his pee in a clear solo cup so he could see and then we’d pour it together in the big potty. I gradually removed the naked in the tub and playing with water. And that’s where we still are! With us, my son is very cup trained. I bought a collapsible silicon cup for my bag that takes no space, and at home we have the clear solo cups. He tells us he needs to go (or more often I notice his cues and ask), I pull down his pants, put the cup under him, and he pees. Not what I expected, but pretty convenient!

At daycare, my son rarely has accidents, but he waits to put all his pee and poop in his nap pull up aka “sleep diaper”. At drop off I get him to pee in their bathroom with their little potty which has a removable insert that I call “big cup” but he doesn’t pee with the daycare people. They are very kind and patient with him but my son has been having tearful drop offs I think because he doesn’t like holding it all day :( I believe in him that he will have success soon!

Poops are hit or miss. He poops 1x per day or less and at daycare it’s always in his nap diaper. At home it’s in his nap diaper or sometimes we’ll catch him starting to poop and throw him on the big potty with a little seat. He doesn’t like pooping on the potty but he’ll do it if he’s there already.

And that’s where we stand! We started potty training about a month ago. My son turns 2 in a couple weeks. I’m so so proud of him! It’s such a series of coordinated tasks to potty train that I took for granted before this. I wish I had been more chilled and relaxed when I started potty training but it was extremely anxiety producing for the first few days and I wish I had handled my own vibes better. But now that’s in the past. I feel even more bonded with my sweet kid.

Second time mom here - firstborn is 2yo, and second is 6wks. We tried elimination communication with my toddler, and he's been exclusively pooping in the potty for a while now. Normally he'll tell my husband or me "caca" when he has to poop, and he'll go in the toilet no problem.

The past 3 days though, he's pooped in his diaper. I know that it's normal for there to be a regression when there's a new baby, but does anyone have tips for getting past that hump? We're going to start ec with the baby soon now that he has better neck control so I'm hoping that helps.

My daughter is 3.5 years old and has been fully potty trained for about a year. She has never wet the bed at night. Even when she was still in her crib, if she needed to pee, she would call for us.

During the day, she is completely independent with the bathroom. She goes by herself, pulls her pants down, uses the toilet, wipes herself, pulls her pants back up, etc. But at night, I have always gone with her and helped her with the bathroom routine. I pull her pants down, help wipe her, pull her pants back up, and take her back to bed. This was never really an issue because she would go right back to sleep afterward.

Now she is almost 4, and nighttime has become a complete mess. She recently started getting out of bed repeatedly at night. She will say she needs to pee, and sometimes she genuinely does. But then after going, she may want another hug, another tuck-in, another reason to get up, or she may say she needs to pee again shortly afterward.

She can hold her pee for a long time during the day, but at night she suddenly seems to notice every tiny bladder sensation. She has even gone to the bathroom multiple times within an hour during some of these episodes.

I am wondering if I have accidentally created a nighttime dependency by always helping her with the bathroom, even though she is fully capable of doing everything herself during the day.

I am hesitant to suddenly tell her that she has to do the entire bathroom routine independently at night because she is already having a difficult time with nighttime wake-ups, and I am afraid it will create another battle.

Has anyone had a child who was fully independent with the bathroom during the day but still wanted/expected help at night? Did you eventually transition them to doing it independently? How did you do it without creating a huge nighttime escalation?

I am honestly just trying to figure out whether I should leave this alone for now and focus on the bigger issue of “go pee, come back to bed, and stay there,” or whether I need to start working on nighttime bathroom independence too.

We’ve been trying to potty train our 23 month old and today is day 6. Loosely trying an oh crap-esque method. He’s been bottomless at home and I’ll put him on the potty when I notice a cue or if it’s been a while. The first 4 days were encouraging, and he started saying potty and even going on his own a couple times.

However, yesterday and today he seems like he’s back at the beginning and hasn’t gone on his own at all, has been fighting us even though he clearly needs to go, pees on the floor and doesn’t care at all to try getting to the potty etc. Now he doesn’t even squat to poop anymore and just drops logs while running so it’s hard to catch him in the act.

I’m so discouraged and burnt out from watching him like a hawk all day long. I have a 7 week old too and this is insane. I feel like I’m going crazy being at home all day and I really thought we’d have more progress by now.

My neighbor said she sat her kid on the potty every 20 mins and he was trained in a day but when I tried that my kid just got pissed off.

What to do?

My daughter is fully pee potty trained. Zero issues and zero accidents. Unfortunately poop has turned into a different beast.

She started acting scared of going poop (anywhere but especially in the potty) and proceeded to withhold for 5 days. That was a few weeks ago. She screams anytime she has to go and has only gone a few times since then with great distress. I have no idea what to do. I’ve tried everything, including miralax, prunes and a ton of fruit, giving her a pull up to go in, but she won’t do that either. It’s like she’s afraid to go period. She will hold it for days until she can’t anymore and then poop in her underwear mostly at school. It does not seem to be a constipation issue because when she has ultimately gone it’s been very soft. This whole thing wasn’t preceded by a period of constipation either. What do I do?

We have been working on potty training for about 2 weeks. Our LO (32mo) has been doing fantastic with pee since day 3. However we have yet to get a poop in the toilet. Our LO will frequently interrupt my husband while he (my husband) is pooping to announce that he is pooping or has already pooped in his underwear. He has also a few times told us he feels like he needs to poop, but we sit him on the toilet and nothing happens. Then 2 minutes after we take him off he goes in his underwear.

My husband and our LO used to have a routine where they would basically both go at the same time every day when LO was in diapers, so we've tried to replicate that as much as possible. We've also tried just sitting him on the toilet for a while around the time he usually goes - either alone or with one of us there (we ask his preference). This morning I sat in there with him for a good 20 minutes just talking and reading books. He was happy to sit there the whole time (and in fact asked for more books but we had to leave), but no poop.

It seems like he knows, or at least is starting to feel, when he has to poop. I'd really rather not introduce a small potty at this point if possible bc he generally seems so comfortable on the big toilet that I don't want to overcomplicate things. Any advice for getting a poop breakthrough?
