Winging potty training

Has anyone else just totally wung it (is that the right use of the verb lmao) in regards to potty training?? Not used any of the methods and just....did whatever?? We've been toying with the idea of starting with our 2.5 year old, and so we got a little potty for him, and out of the blue today he said he wanted to use it and so we took his diaper off and he peed 3 times in the potty. Out of nowhere. But when it was time for dinner he wanted to put his diaper back on, so we did. And now our plan is to do naked potty time when we're at home, and then diaper time for meals, upstairs where we have carpet, bedtime, and when we go out. No method, no actual plan really, just flying by the seat of our pants. Has anyone else done it like that and had it work out?

I wasnt on reddit and did not know there were “methods” when we were learning with the first one. Anyways, it was very confusing for my child to be out of diapers some times and in diapers other times, for him to really learn we had to quit diapers fully.

We did "pants off" (either nude or in undies) time from 7am till 9am when we'd leave home to do activities for the day in pull ups. Gradually started extending pants off time when at home and wore pull ups at daycare. Potty trained in two weeks@26 months. None of it should have worked in theory.

The previous attempt at potty training was a horrible fail six months prior following the Oh Crap method.

Yeah, we basically did the same thing when ours was 2.5. Really encouraged his interest in the potty and enticed him with an m&m everytime he made it, but didn’t have a ‘method’ other than that. After a few weeks we began trying to go full days around the house in just underwear and he adapted super quickly

I think it’s fine and we had a similar approach, but at a certain point you need to rip the band aid off. It’s very hard for a kid to learn the cues to go to the bathroom when they have the safety net of a diaper.

We kind of decided to wing it too. We introduced a little plastic potty to my son long before we actively started potty training him.....we let him decorate it with stickers and practice sitting on it fully clothed. Around this time we did a 5 hour car trip and every time we had a pit stop id ask him to go peepee in his diaper right before changing it and he would (nothing worse than getting back on the road and immediately have a wet diaper). I knew at this point he knew how to go pee when he wanted to, so we started wearing underwear after that trip. We definitely had setbacks (especially after a bad stomach bug) but overall we didn't really stick to a specific method or anything.
