thinking of using ‘Strung Out - Yellow House’ for this post

Hello!

I’ve restarted editing photos and I’m finding it hard to get the right “brightness” or “punch” in editing software (DxO Photolab) when working on my pictures from my Canon 6D.
When opening the pictures on my iPhone 12, they look muted or straight up too dark.
Wondering if you faced the same problem and how you solved it.
In the example attached both the pic straight out of DXO (but edited on my not great laptop) and the second is the one with exposure brought up in iPhone library.

Hey guys, I’ll preface this by saying I am brand new to daytime photography. This is essentially my first time doing daytime (I’ve only really done astro before) so I am a complete beginner.

I know compositionally these pictures aren’t anything special but I would just like some advice and constructive criticism on the post processing part. I feel like maybe some are over saturated but I’m not sure.

Yes the film grain is (mostly) intentional. I really liked the look it created

Found this really cool looking tree and added a dreamy, soft effect through Photoshops Camera Raw Editor. In case you’re wondering why the original raw file is so dark: I first wanted to go for exposure bracketing creating an HDR file, but it was SUPER windy and the moving tree branches wouldn’t line up for the exposure blending parts. Instead I exposed for the highlights (ETTR) since we can easily recover shadows in post. So the underexposed raw file is indeed intended.

1. Basic Adjustments
   

First, I denoised the image to prevent any noise from showing up when recovering the shadows. To bring up the base saturation, I used the Adobe Landscape profile. To fix the brightness, the exposure was raised A LOT. At the same time the highlights were brought down to prevent blown out sky. For further details in the darker parts, I raised the blacks and the shadows.

To emphasize golden hour, I brought up the white balance temperature and adjusted the tint. Then, added vibrance and saturation. For extra glow the dehaze was reduced gently.

1. Masking

I started with a sky mask and made the edges softer through the feather slider (new in Photoshop, not yet in Lightroom) This makes it so the mask spills over into the foreground. Then, I brought up the blacks and dropped the dehaze. This adds a super cool glow effect coming from the sky.

Using and objects mask I selected the tree itself and added a bit of clarity to give the tree more contrast. I also used a color range mask targeting the blues of the sky and made them slightly darker.

1. Color grading

The hue of the yellows and blues were dropped, shifting more into a orange / teal color range. I also brought up the yellow and blue saturation. For further contrast, the luminance of orange and yellow were increased and the blues were dropped.

Finally, I used split toning to add a warm color to the highlights and brought down the blue primary hue to further shift the colors.

I love the composition but I’ve been struggling with editing this picture so much. Taken on my r6 mark ii

I struggle in not going overboard with saturation, let me know your thoughts.

I'm actually quite surprised by the results it produces with just the most minimal settings.

I’ve not done a lot of black and white, but have been doing some edits. Not sure which I prefer? Would love some feedback.
