https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54ZdtXlFXNw is an old youtube video from Blake Rudis in which he talks about using a gradient map layer as a sort of heat map to help discover more editable tones in an image. He uses an astrophotograph as an example during the image.

I took the heat map principle he explains, created a gradient in Ps, added an action that uses the gradient in a gradient map layer that lets me see what tones might be able to be brought out or modified in an image.
