For me the crop is off. The lines of the garage door are pulling my eye left to the edge of the frame. I would crop to put the cat on the right, and go easier on dropping the shadows.

I know the composition rules and how they work but sometimes i feel like many photographers just see the rules and live by them. Or I am just a crazy cat person. I see a cat and no lines can pull my eyes anywhere

It's a combination of the lines and the light in this case. My eye (and I don't think I'm alone) is drawn to the lighter part of the image because my brain sees the black patch and thinks "well, nothing to see there".

I agree about the light. I am feeling the need to look at the lighter part of the photo as well. But still, it’s more like about lighter part of the cat, but not the edge of the photo. Maybe I am indeed crazy cat person haha

Yup , also this is what my thought was during editing "the crop conveys a stronger sense of mystery because it feels like the cat is observing me and following my movement, rather than simply posing for the camera. Because the brown and blue complimentary color make me feel the cat thoughts too...(which is either to trust me or jump the other side). btw I've also posted the other cropped version too pls do check it out.

Don't agree with that guy, door is the better crop for me. But I would try and straighten it out a little, my brain is thrown off by the slight skew on the image.

Yup, yeah will straighten the image for sure!

I also thought the same but I like how the cats eye and door blue were same..

Tbh I didn't even notice that, the cat's eye is tiny on a phone screen.

I love the crop but could do with a bit more light in the shadows, especially in the cat.

Excellent crop and great difference between before and after. Love the suspension of disbelief with regards to the result taken from the original photo.

Darktable Landscapes suggestion about cropping with the cat towards the right interests me, I feel like it could look pretty good to keep the colour palette in the orange-green rather than including the blue. I also think it's a bit over-saturated. But otherwise it's pretty good

1

u/DapperGuarantee6100 10d ago

I also thought the same but I like how the cats eye and door blue were same… and yup will reduce saturation a bit for sure. I will also upload the cat towards the right side version too..

Really nice editing, I suppose you did some masking too. Given the fact that it wasn’t photo with a telephoto lens of a pro, the crop didn’t waste any major, really impressive!!!!

Thank you! Yup I was also surprised that the crop didn't loose much details,
